OtapediaMori Calliope - VTuber

Mori Calliope is an English speaking VTuber with some Japanese fluency from Hololive English that immediately became popular after her debut, which included the release of her first original song, “Excuse My Rudeness, But Could You Please RIP?”, which has over 17.5 million views as of April 2021.

Mori Calliope Background

Mori Calliope (often simply called Calli) is a female grim reaper VTuber that loves rapping, playing RPG Maker games, and drinking wine. Aside from this, Calli also plays a variety of other games as well, some of which are infamous for their difficulty like Cuphead, Blasphemous, and Crash Bandicoot.

Mori Calliope History

Prior to her debut, the Hololive English branch of Hololive Production was announced on both Twitter and the official Hololive subreddit on September 9th, 2020. Calli would later make her debut on her YouTube channel several days later on September 12th. During her debut, Calli released her first original song, which quickly went viral and reached over 1,000,000 views within the next week. This song and several other originals were later collected into an EP album titled DEAD BEATS that was released on October 20th, 2020. In 2021, Calli would end up reaching 1,000,000 subscribers on her channel in January and release her second EP album, Your Mori, to celebrate her birthday on April 4th.

Mori Calliope Physical Description

Although she is a reaper that is older than any human alive today, Calli takes the appearance of a young woman with pink waist-length hair and red eyes. Since she is a more recent addition to Hololive, she currently only has one outfit as of April 2021. This outfit consists of a black dress that is adorned with various golden trim and accessories like buttons, bangles, and the like. Calli also wears a black cape that is littered with tears and holes toward the bottom. This cape also has several spikes lining its top along Calli’s shoulders. Calli also wears a dark tiara on top of her head that has a thin, transparent veil that flows with her hair behind her back.

Calliope may only have one outfit, but for April Fool’s Day 2021, she and the rest of Hololive English revealed chibi versions of their Live2D models that were fully animated. These models were drawn by Walfie, an artist that made a name for himself in the Hololive community by making short, chibi-style drawings and animations of various VTubers, but mainly of the Hololive English cast.

Mori Calliope Personality

Many people might associate an apprentice of Death as being ruthless and intimidating, Calli is often seen as sweet and caring, though she has a wild side that likes to swear and often shows itself when she raps or gets frustrated. Perhaps due to her time working as a reaper, Calli does not have as much experience with talking with humans as the other HoloEN members and is not immediately familiar with modern slang. As such, Calli likes to use it herself to make her seem more appealing to a modern audience. While all of the Hololive English members get along well, Calli is especially close with Takanashi Kiara and the two of them spent a lot of time together while the two were still located in Japan. That said, Calli easily gets shy and flustered when people mention how close they are, leading to some of her fans calling her a “tsundereaper”.

Associated Company

Hololive Production is a VTuber agency that manages a large number of members that live in various parts of the world, though its largest branch is the Japanese-speaking branch of its all-female group, Hololive. Hololive English (sometimes abbreviated as HoloEN), includes five members as of April 2021: Calli herself, Ninomae Ina'nis, Takanashi Kiara, Watson Amelia, and Gawr Gura (Gauru Gura).

Notable Series

While Calli features a wide range of content on her channel from original music to drawing streams, some of the most common uploads on her channel include her playthroughs of RPG Maker games and infamously difficult games.

RPG Maker Games

During her debut, Calli mentioned that she enjoyed playing various games made using RPG Maker, a fairly popular and accessible program that is mainly used to develop RPG games for PC. After her debut stream, Calli would hold several variety streams, but her first game stream would feature Mad Father, a puzzle-based horror game. She would later go on to play other widely popular horror RPG Maker games like Ib, Ao Oni, and Misao. That said, she has also played other games like Omori, which is by far her longest RPG Maker game playthrough.

Challenging Games

Aside from her RPG Maker and other general streams, Calli also tends to play games that are infamously difficult for one reason or another. While notoriously difficult classics like Cuphead and Blasphemous are classic examples of this, Calli has also played other games in the Guilty Gear series which, like most other traditional fighting games, requires a fair amount of skill to play.

Other Notable Activities

Aside from her gaming streams, Mori Calliope also has a prominent focus on music as well. As of April 2021, Calli has released two EP albums on top of multiple singles. While her main style of music is rap, she can also sing and has done so on several occasions. She has also appeared in collaborations with a few different VTubers and companies, the most notable of which include the Holostars member, Rikka, the mobile developer Cygames for Princess Connect! Re:Dive, and with Hololive for the trailer of the music video for the “Hololive Alternative” project.
