OtapediaCell Dragon Ball Z - Figures

Dragon Ball broke the mold in some ways and perfected the art of the Shonen Jump formula. In essence, the protagonist must face a seemingly impossible challenge, suffer defeat, come back stronger, and finally win. This has become a staple in Shonen Jump storytelling. One of the finest examples of this is when Doctor Gero’s supercomputer created the invincible organic Android, Cell. In a stroke of genius, writer Akira Toriyama made a villain who is literally made of all of the cells of the strongest villains so far–and all of the Z-Fighters. This means that Cell has access to all of their unique powers and techniques, making him at the time a revolutionary and extremely interesting character. Cell has a number of forms, but here are his final and second last forms shown in these top figures by “Figure-rise’s Standard Perfect Cell”, “S.H.Figuarts’ Perfect Cell” and the “SCultures’ Figure Colosseum Semi-perfect Cell versus Vegeta”.

Figure-rise Standard Dragon Ball Z Perfect Cell: New Package Ver. Figure

Perfect Cell’s colors are mainly green and black. Not looking unlike an insect, He has a tail tucked away under two long wings. Cell’s face and hands are white showing some coloration taken from Frieza’s palette. For having the DNA of so many different characters he still displays a very unique design. At 7.7” and with optional parts including hands and an angry face, Cell is probably best fitted with a smirk. Cell knew he was on top and in control the whole time. What’s worse, his only desire was to fight someone strong enough to pose a challenge.

S.H.Figuarts Dragon Ball Z Perfect Cell - Premium Color Edition Figure

Perfect Cell was just that; perfect. He knew full well that he had an edge over just about any other character in the series at the time. It seemed at first that Goku was a good match for Perfect Cell in his mastered Super Saiyan form, but alas, the organic android managed to outclass him, forcing him to give up early. Also receiving a Kamehameha point-blank to the face and surviving with only his legs remaining was an incredible feat of regeneration. 6” tall and fully articulated for a host of hell-raising poses, S.H. Figuarts Cell is amazing. The way his black part shines truly is reminiscent of the anime. Included are the typical folded arms Cell often shows, obviously in part due to his incredible arrogance.

Dragon Ball Z SCultures Figure Colosseum Zokei Tenkaichi Budokai 5

Semi-perfect Cell was a force to be reckoned with when he first appeared, Piccolo had just fused with Kami in order to reach the power of Android 17 in the hope of destroying him before Cell could absorb him. Unfortunately though in the heat of battle against 17, to everyone’s horror, Cell popped up and absorbed 17. This didn’t last long though, as Vegeta and Trunks emerged from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with ridiculous power gains. Semi-Perfect Cell was easily crushed by Vegeta until he allowed him to absorb Android 18.

About Cell

Cell is the fourth or fifth major villain in Dragon Ball Z depending on if the androids are counted. His arc was extremely well-executed, going from a sneaky, under the radar terror, to a brute with huge power, and eventually becoming the perfect fighter and ultimate adversary.

Background

While converting 17 and 18 to androids and working on the considered-malfunctional 16, Dr. Gero set his supercomputer to create the perfect bio-android, as a last-ditch attempt to get revenge on Son Goku on behalf of the Red Ribbon army. Cell in the main continuity timeline was destroyed by Krillin and Trunks when they discovered Dr. Gero’s lab. But a Cell from another timeline where the androids had been deactivated managed to murder Trunks before he could set off in his time machine, stole it and arrived in the main continuity. Cell’s main goal is to fight the strongest fighter he can find, essentially to become as perfect a fighter as he can.

Special Abilities

Cell has all of the special abilities of the Z-Fighters and villains up until the mecha-Frieza and King Cold arrival. Dr. Gero’s supercomputer developed tiny almost microscopic robots to fly around and gather up DNA from the strongest beings on the planet. The result is Cell. Piccolo’s regeneration, Frieza’s ruthlessness and ability to survive anywhere, and Goku and the other Saiyans’ ability to increase power levels after near-death experiences and the ability to use a technique after seeing it once.

Other Important Dragon Ball Z Characters

Cell would never have reached his full potential were it not for another Dragon Ball character, and wouldn't even exist at all if not for another. The former being Son Gohan, and the latter Doctor Gero and the androids.

Doctor Gero and the Androids

Canonically, in Dragon Ball Z (not including the original Dragon Ball) Dr. Gero made three androids and his computer made a fourth, Cell. Non-canonically he made four more, three that appear in a studio-only movie and one that appears in a game. If it weren’t for Dr. Gero’s eternal hatred of Son Goku, he would never have had the motivation to create the androids 17 and 18, in turn, this would imply that Cell would never have become perfect or even existed at all.

Son Gohan

Son Gohan, while taking the mantle of protector of Earth from his father, managed to push Cell to the very brink of his sanity. The power gap was eventually too great and Cell was forced to regurgitate android 18 and reverted back to his Semi-Perfect form. This was unacceptable for Cell so instead of losing, he decided to self destruct and kill everyone. Goku however teleported him to King Kai’s planet in the nick of time. Cell was not defeated however as he could regenerate from a single cell that was left from the explosion and came back as Super Perfect Cell.
