About Ryo Saeba

Ryo Saeba is the main protagonist throughout the City Hunter series. He made his first appearance in the series during the release of the manga, which was published beginning in 1985 and ending in 1991. Here is a brief overview of the character.

Background

At three years old Ryo experienced a horrible plane crash in Central America. As the only survivor, he was raised as a guerilla fighter during the war. After the end of the war, Ryo decides to find a new purpose for his life by moving to Tokyo. Once he is there, he forms a business known as “City Hunter” with Hideyuki Makimura. Ryo is known ironically to some as “The Stallion of Shinjuku” for his womanizing behavior. He tries to hit on every beautiful woman he sees, seemingly failing every time.

Special Abilities

Ryo Saeba is a peak specimen of physical and mental capability. He is strong and swift, a formidable enemy in hand-to-hand combat. Ryo is also a highly skilled gunman, rarely missing his target. He also is very difficult to outsmart, being able to plan several steps ahead of his enemies.

Other Important City Hunter Characters

Ryo is the main character of the series, but he can’t run his “City Hunter” business all on his own! There are a plethora of other characters that have prominent roles throughout the series. Here are two other characters that are very important to the City Hunter story.

Hideyuki Makimura

Hideyuki Makimura is Ryo’s “partner-in-crime”. Before creating “City Hunter”, Makimura was a former police detective with a strong sense of justice. Even outside of the law, he always fights to do what is right. Unfortunately, Hideyuki is murdered by gangsters, and his sister Kaori takes over his role as Ryo’s partner.

Kaori Makimura

Kaori Makimura is the sister of Hideyuki Makimura, though not by blood. After the untimely death of her brother, she resolves to take his role in the “City Hunter” business alongside Ryo Saeba. She primarily focuses on managerial tasks and arranging meetings with clients. She and Ryo don’t always get along but they make a great team.
