OtapediaKing Dice Cuphead - Figures

Cuphead is a platforming run-and-gun game that was developed and published by Studio MDHR for Windows and Xbox One on September 29th, 2017, with ports to other consoles made available in the following years. The game centers around the titular protagonist, Cuphead, and his brother Mugman as they defeat the odds and pay off the debt they owe to the Devil after betting their souls in his casino. The visuals of the game were designed with a classic 1930’s style cartoon aesthetic that was drawn by hand, then digitized to create animated sprites in-game. The unique presentation and high difficulty, high reward-style gameplay caused Cuphead to be an incredible critical and commercial success, which eventually led to various kinds of merchandise being produced, with one of the most popular kinds being collectible figures of the unique, expressive characters from the game. An example of such a character is King Dice, the right-hand man of the Devil and the manager of his casino. One notably popular figure of King Dice is the “Pop! Games: Cuphead Series 1 - King Dice”.

Pop! Games: Cuphead Series 1 - King Dice Figure

This entry into Funko’s popular Pop! Games series features the secondary antagonist, King Dice, standing confidently with a menacing grin on his face. He wears his signature purple suit, lavender shoes, and white gloves. The die that King Dice has instead of a head has dots colored with a matching shade of purple and is numbered like a standard six-sided die, with the “1” side making up King Dice’s face. Instead of the solid black eyes that accompany most standard Pop! figures, this figure of King Dice uses pie-shaped eyes - a common design trope used in 1930’s animation.

King Dice is also posed with one hand on his hip and the other raised in front of him as if he were inviting the player for a game in his casino. Combined with his arrogant grin and mischievously furrowed eyebrows, one glance is all it takes to understand King Dice’s cunning, conniving nature. One notable feature of this figure is that, while the standard version uses King Dice’s purple color palette, there is a one-in-six chance that the buyer will receive the alternate “Chase” version. This color-swapped variant exchanges King Dice’s classic purple design with a brighter yellow one, introducing an aspect of chance to the figure.

About King Dice

King Dice is a secondary antagonist in Cuphead and is the one in charge of the Devil’s casino. The following is a short summary of his character.

Background

Although it is uncertain how long King Dice has been working for the Devil, it is apparent that they work very closely together. King Dice is considered to be the second-in-command to the Devil and is the last boss character Cuphead fights before taking on the Devil himself. As the manager of the casino, King Dice is very keen on winning any bet that he makes, even if that means using some underhanded methods. This can be seen after Cuphead fulfills his debt to the casino, as King Dice challenges him to one last “game” where King Dice attempts to kill Cuphead himself before meeting the Devil. The reason for this was that King Dice had made a bet with the Devil saying that Cuphead would not be able to repay his debts. Since being in debt with the Devil is a serious matter, King Dice decided to take matters into his own hands.

King Dice’s Battle

Like most boss battles in Cuphead, King Dice’s battle is divided into separate phases. The first phase has King Dice standing behind a board with numbered spaces and “safe” spaces. At the beginning of the fight, King Dice produces a pink die that spins between the numbers 1, 2, and 3. The player can parry this die to make it stop, which moves the marker however many spaces the die landed on. When the marker lands on a number, Cuphead is teleported to a new room and fights one of the nine different casino-themed mini-bosses. Landing on a “safe” space allows the player to roll again. Once the player reaches the final space, the second phase begins.

The second phase has Cuphead fighting against King Dice himself. King Dice only has one attack, which has him putting his hand on one side of the table and having it cartoonishly dance around. This produces a series of ace cards to spawn and start moving to the other side of the screen. These cards appear in all four suits, but the heart cards are pink, meaning the player can parry them to dodge all of the others. Once the player has damaged King Dice enough, he is defeated and the fight ends.

Other Important Cuphead Characters

As the manager of the Devil’s casino, King Dice interacts with many different characters, but none as important as his boss, the Devil, and the titular protagonist, Cuphead.

The Devil

The Devil is the main antagonist of Cuphead and the uncontested ruler of the final world of the game, Inkwell Hell. He is incredibly prideful but is not afraid to lie and manipulate others into doing what he wants. Even though King Dice has worked under the Devil for an untold number of years, the Devil shows no hint of remorse or empathy toward King Dice after his defeat.

Cuphead

Cuphead is the protagonist of Cuphead and, like the various classic cartoon protagonists that inspired his character, has a kind personality, but has a mischievous side as well. His eager, playful nature also causes him to find himself in trouble often. In the intro to the game, Cuphead is seen eager to bet both his and Mugman’s soul on a gamble with the promise of wealth if they won. Of course, this gamble ended in the brothers losing, resulting in the devil challenging the pair to collect the soul contracts of other debtors. As they continue collecting these contracts, King Dice commends them on their progress, but ultimately challenges them before they speak with the Devil.
