OtapediaSuper Saiyan 4 (SSJ4) Goku Dragon Ball GT - Figures

Dragon Ball GT received some questionable reception. Purists demand that it isn’t or shouldn’t be a part of the Dragon Ball universe. The reason for this is that when Dragon Ball Z finished airing in 1996 the fans were left wanting more. Toriyama Akira had not continued the manga and therefore there was no new material to work with. Toei opted to create an original series as a continuation of the story. Toriyama had some creative input, such as character designs and concepts, but the majority of the material was developed by the animation studio Toei. Fans criticized the series heavily, some even claiming that GT means ‘Gomen Toriyama’ or ‘Goku Time’. Needless to say though, GT delivered some incredible storylines, scenes, and characters. One such concept is the Super Saiyan 4. Goku being the first user of this form makes sense. Here are three of the most popular Super Saiyan 4 Goku figures around; “Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle 4th Anniversary Figure: Super Saiyan 4 Son Goku”, “Dragon Ball GT x10 Kamehameha Figure: Super Saiyan 4 Goku Figure” and the “Ichiban Figure Dragon Ball GT Super Saiyan 4 Goku Figure”.

Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle 4th Anniversary Figure: Super Saiyan 4 Son Goku Figure

A collaboration with Dokkan Battle, one of the most popular Dragon Ball games to date, featuring characters from all of the series and more. This figure shows a slightly darker than usual coloration, giving a more gritty edge to the powerful Super Saiyan 4 Goku; fitting considering that the latter half of the show is somewhat darker in tone than the former. 165mm (6.5”) and expertly crafted and painted. Banpresto’s Super Saiyan 4 Goku has all the elements of the show and more, from the battle-ready pose to the broken ground he stands on (which also has a small Dragon Ball Dokkan Battle mural behind, indicative of the collaboration).

Dragon Ball GT x10 Kamehameha Figure: Super Saiyan 4 Goku Figure

The Kamehameha never gets old. The charging sound, the monosyllabic uttering of the name, and the bright blue flash that follows. Super Saiyan 4 was until the release of Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball Super Heroes, the strongest user of the Kamehameha, in fact, upgrading it further to its times ten form that goes from blue to red as the series progresses. The way this figure is painted shows not only the small details in the fur, tail, clothes, and muscles but also allows a shine, especially in Goku’s jet black hair.

  • Product Name: Dragon Ball GT x10 Kamehameha Figure: Super Saiyan 4 Goku
  • Manufacturer: Banpresto
  • Specifications: Painted, non-articulated, non-scale figure with stand
  • Height: 19 cm | 7.5"

Ichiban Figure Dragon Ball GT Super Saiyan 4 Goku Figure

A menacing scowl, eyebrows furrowed under jet black Super Saiyan 4 hair; the facial expression is near perfection. Coloring is exactly like the anime and textures are astounding. The fur on Goku’s shoulders and tail looks amazing. Additionally, the smooth skin textures of the chest and hands create an epic contrast. Folds and shading in clothes and the creases in the hands and fingers are all the finishing touches needed to bring Bandai’s Ichiban Figure Dragon Ball GT Super Saiyan 4 Goku to life. In his non-articulated 9.8” form, Super Saiyan 4 Goku stands tall with his left hand outstretched and ready to fire a ki blast from the palm.

About Super Saiyan 4 (SSJ4) Goku

Super Saiyan 4 is an advanced version of the Super Saiyan form introduced in Dragon Ball GT. The user gains a tail, long, spiky hair, and most commonly red or pink fur over most of their body except for hands, face, and chest.

Background

Goku uncovered this elusive and ultimate form by first transforming into a Golden Oozaru (Golden Great Ape) and seeing his granddaughter Pan trying to calm him down. Vegeta, not possessing a tail, achieves this form by using a machine made by Bulma to fire Blutz waves at him forcing him into the Oozaru (Great Ape) form. From there Vegeta was able to gain control of his tailless great ape form and achieve Super Saiyan 4.

Special Abilities

Immeasurable increase in speed, power, and ki come with this transformation. Super Saiyan 4 is as far as the Super Saiyan transformations went in the Dragon Ball series (despite being non-canon) until the creation of Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue. Super Saiyan 4 could almost be said to be the Oozaru form in a humanoid shape.

Other Important Dragon Ball GT Characters

Super Saiyan 4 required extra help to achieve for both Goku and Vegeta. The other instances of Super Saiyan 4 are either a fusion or other various characters in the also non-canon Super Dragon Ball Heroes such as Super Saiyan 4 Gohan or Broly. The two characters that helped the most in achieving this form though are without a doubt Pan and Bulma.

Pan

Pan is Goku’s granddaughter; the daughter of Gohan and Videl. She accompanies Goku and Trunks on their interstellar quest to find the Dragon Balls. Through the adventures, the experience Goku and Pan become close and have a great fondness for one another. When Kid Goku (with a tail) transforms into a Golden Great Ape, he loses control of himself and becomes a danger to everyone around and perhaps even the planet itself. Pan reminds Goku who he is, so he can regain control of the Golden Great Ape form and achieve the Super Saiyan 4 form.

Bulma / Vegeta

Bulma, like Pan, is instrumental in achieving this form except not for Goku, but for Vegeta. When Goku is struggling against the Shadow Dragons (Shenron) Vegeta uses Bulma’s Blutz generator to regrow his tail and become a Golden Great Ape. This allowed him to achieve Super Saiyan 4 and helped slightly even the odds.
