Final Fantasy IX was originally released for the PlayStation in July 2000 and was both developed and published by Square Enix (Squaresoft at the time of release). As a part of an already massively popular Final Fantasy series, a wide variety of merchandise inspired by the game was created, with one of the most popular kinds of merchandise being the collectible figure. Vivi Ornitier is one such character from Final Fantasy IX that is particularly popular among fans for his mysterious origins and interesting character development from a reserved, clumsy boy to a confident, reliable black mage. Bring Arts Final Fantasy IX Vivi Ornitier & Adelbert Steiner Set Figure

This set of figures features the black mage Vivi and the knight Captain Steiner. Vivi’s design is perfectly recreated and includes his classic black mage outfit: a pair of black shoes, white and green striped pants, a blue jacket, and an iconic large pointed hat. His clothing hides his shadowy body, leaving only his glowing yellow eyes visible. The figure of Steiner also captures the Captain’s likeness. His suit of armor is painted in a metallic grey, which makes it look like it is made with actual metal instead of plastic. The characteristic feather in his hat is also present, completing his look.

Both of these figures are also fully articulated and include an incredible variety of extra parts to allow for an impressive amount of customizability and poses. Such parts include several facial expressions and weapons for both characters. Vivi is given a Mage Staff and High Mage Staff, while Steiner has an Iron Sword and Excalibur.

Trading Arts Mini Final Fantasy Figure Assortment Vol. 2 (Box of 6)

This set of six figures is pulled from a collection of five possible characters. Each figure is packaged blind box-style, meaning that getting each character in the collection is not guaranteed. This particular collection includes an Advent Children variation of Cloud, Terra, Bartz, Vincent, and Vivi. Like with other figures in the Trading Arts Mini line, each figure in this collection has a notably super-deformed design with large heads and smaller bodies.

This is particularly pronounced for Vivi, whose hat alone appears to be larger than the rest of his body. That said, the rest of his appearance is accurately recreated, like his bright yellow eyes and classic outfit. He also comes equipped with a Mage Staff, which completes his Black Mage outfit.

About Vivi Ornitier

Vivi Ornitier is a black mage from Final Fantasy IX and is a playable character that joins the player’s main party.

Background

Like all black mage characters in Final Fantasy IX, Vivi is an artificially created being that is innately skilled with destructive black magic. Despite his origin, however, Vivi has an exceptionally child-like personality and lacks self-confidence. After he is chased by guards in Alexandria for watching the Tantalus Theater Troupe’ play without a ticket, Vivi uses a Fire spell in self-defense but ends up revealing Princess Garnet’s identity in the process. The leader of Tantalus, Zidane, notices his skill with magic and asks Vivi to join their group and help save Garnet. Vivi is initially unsure about joining the group but does after some encouragement from Garnet’s bodyguard, Steiner.

Special Abilities

As a black mage, Vivi specializes in black magic, a variety of magic that focuses on dealing damage. Such spells include Fire, Blizzard, Thunder, Death, Meteor, Flare, and so on. He also is the character with the highest base magic stat, making his spells even more powerful. Focus is an ability unique to Vivi and raises his magic stat even higher. His Trance transformation gives him the “Double Black” ability, which allows him to use two spells in one turn. If Steiner is also in the party during a battle, they can use Sword Magic, which makes use of Vivi’s black magic and Steiner’s physical strength.

As a playable character and member of the Tantalus Theater Troupe, Vivi can be seen interacting with many different characters in Final Fantasy IX, but two of the most important are likely Zidane and Adelbert Steiner

Zidane Tribal

Zidane Tribal is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy IX and a member of the Tantalus Theater Troupe - a band of thieves that use the guise of performers as cover to hide their true work. Unlike the previous protagonists of Final Fantasy games like Cloud Strife and Squall Leonhart, Zidane has a casual, yet outgoing personality and is often seen as a womanizer. After inviting Vivi to join his party, Zidane acts much like a big brother to him and often comforts him when he begins to question himself.

Adelbert Steiner

Steiner is a Captain of the Knights of Pluto and acts as a bodyguard for Princess Garnet. He is incredibly loyal to his mission and is willing to sacrifice his values and even his health if it meant keeping the Princess safe, which eventually led him to join Tantalus Theater Troupe after they had kidnapped Garnet. When Zidane was attempting to have Vivi join them as well, Steiner is the one that gives him the confidence to agree.
