OtapediaGuts Berserk - Figures

Hitting the shelves in 1989 following a pilot chapter the previous year, Berserk began its gruesome yet revered run in the magazine Monthly Animal House (now Young Animal). Conjured and penned by Kentaro Miura, known for an almost impossibly detailed art style, Berserk follows the story of Guts the black swordsman, and his nemesis Griffith. Set in a dark medieval European universe where monsters and magic exist Guts is haunted relentlessly by demons and spirits on his road to revenge. Being so detailed it's no wonder that Berserk figures, including Guts are made to a very high standard of detail and definition. Among these three of the best are “figma’s Berserk Guts: Band of the Hawk” and “Berserk Guts: Berserker Armor”, and “Art of War’s Berserk Guts - The Spinning Cannon Slice”.

figma Berserk Guts: Band of the Hawk Ver. Repaint Edition Figure

With Berserk Guts: Band of the Hawk, Figma has delivered an honest representation of the early soldier-for-hire version of Guts; roaming the land, battlefield to battlefield with only the most basic possessions in tow. Guts’ grey iron armor is limited to his hands, torso, and head. Completing the look, his typical brown pants boots and cloak mean Guts is ready for war wielding a giant greatsword used to rend his enemies into pieces.

figma Berserk Guts: Berserker Armor Ver. Repaint Skull Edition Figure

Post-Eclipse Guts receives firstly, a humongous greatsword called Dragonslayer from Godo the blacksmith and then the Berserker armor from a forest witch. Rightfully named so, the Berserker armor erases all of Guts’ rationality turning him into a pure killing machine. It’s only when with the help of his friends he is able to reel himself back in and recover control. The level of detail in this figure is frankly astounding. Each plate and embellishment is distinctly separate and unique yet the figure is highly articulated. A lack of articulation would be a shame for a figure like this as when in the berserker armor Guts’ body twists and contorts taking on an almost brutally graceful animalistic form. The Dragonslayer has very visible dents and bloodstains of varying thickness to really drive the quality of this figure home.

Berserk Guts - The Spinning Cannon Slice 2016 - 1/6 Scale Black Repainted Ver. Figure

Guts is unapologetically, a maniac. A one-armed man with a giant sword against an unending legion of demons and monsters. Berserk pits Guts against all odds, but with not only his inhuman strength and indomitable will but his ingenuity he almost always comes out on top. Using a cannon attachment hidden inside his iron prosthetic arm, Guts uses the blast to accelerate into a wild spin chopping everything around him into pieces. This model is very pricey and for good reason. It’s a perfect 3D representation of one of the most famous scenes in Berserk and one of Guts’ finest moments. Everything from the detail of the armor, to the bloodstains on Dragonslayer screams extreme attention to detail. The coloring and shading go so far as to even depict the dirt on Guts’ face.

About Guts

Guts is the one-armed, one-eyed protagonist of Berserk. Marked by the brand of the godhand, Guts is haunted night after night by an onslaught of otherworldly horrors. Constantly on the defensive and plagued by sleep deprivation, injuries and insanity, Guts trudges onward gradually making his way towards Griffith, his nemesis, for the ultimate revenge.

Background

Very little is known about Guts’ past. He was raised and sold by mercenaries for various purposes until he became of age and became a mercenary himself. Preferring to live and work alone, Guts traveled between battles collecting money for his martial services and pledging allegiance to no particular side. This changed when he encountered the legendary mercenary group ‘Band of the Hawk’ and was persuaded to join by their leader Griffith. Rising through the ranks to captain quickly and becoming one of Griffith’s closest friends, a number of unforeseen events led to Guts leaving the band. Angered and insulted by Guts’ departure, Griffith acts recklessly and finds himself imprisoned and tortured. Following this is a bleak and very depressing storyline.

Special Abilities

Guts main special ability is his sheer willpower. He will never give up and will fight to the death if the situation calls for it. One stark example of this is when Casca is being attacked by a demonic Griffith in the void. Guts’ arm is grabbed viciously and held between a giant monster's teeth. After finding the monster's teeth are indestructible, without any hesitation Guts uses a broken sword to hack off his own arm and immediately charges toward Griffith at full speed. This is only one instance of Guts’ inhuman willpower, but it is a recurring theme throughout the series.

Other Important Berserk Characters

Guts was born alone, raised without love, and lived and fought alone for the majority of his life. It’s safe to say that he did not have many if any, acquaintances. After joining the Band of the Hawk, however, two figures became very prominent in his life and would ultimately go on to decide the future of the series, Griffith and Casca.

Griffith

Griffith is the leader of the legendary Band of the Hawk mercenary regiment. Not much is known about his past, only that he was a commoner before making his way up through the ranks of society and eventually becoming the leader of his own mercenary group. He meets Guts on the field and immediately takes a liking to him, wanting to ‘own’ him and have him join his group. This doesn’t last forever, however, as Griffith orders Guts to assassinate an aristocrat goes awry and ends in Guts murdering a child, Guts leaves the band, emotionally crushing Griffith in the process. Griffith ends up becoming a god via sacrificing his group, sexually attacking Casca, and sowing the seeds of Guts’ madness and fever for revenge.

Casca

Casca was a commander in the Band of the Hawk. Advisor to Griffith and one of the highest-ranking members. Renowned for her martial prowess and fearlessness on the field, Casca was needless to say a very important character. Initially despising and envying Guts for winning Griffith’s interest, Casca reluctantly works with Guts to overcome a number of difficult battle situations. Eventually, though, the two become romantically intertwined after falling from a cliff and becoming separated from their unit during a battle. Guts kills 100 enemy soldiers alone in a forest to buy time and save Casca’s life.
