Bendy and the Ink Machine is a survival horror game that was developed and published by Kindly Beast (though it uses the name of the in-game universe studio, Joey Drew Studios Inc. as well). The game was released in several installments, with the first being released in early 2017. The game quickly amassed a fan base through popular streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch, where viewers and streamers praised it for its early 1900’s cartoon aesthetic and unsettling horror elements. With the rather unexpected popularity of the series, manufacturers were quick to produce merchandise to satisfy the fans’ desire to add to their collections. One particularly popular character is Boris the Wolf, who has several different appearances and variations throughout the series. Throughout the small handful of figures that recreate the character, one of the most popular figures is the “Pop! Games: Bendy and the Ink Machine Series 2 - Dead Boris”.

Pop! Games: Bendy and the Ink Machine Series 2 - Dead Boris Figure

This figure from Funko’s popular Pop! line of figures recreates an incarnation of Boris the Wolf that has met an unfortunate end. Despite being a three-dimensional figure, this recreation of Boris the Wolf keeps true to the distinct style of early 1900-style cartoons. This Pop! figure uses a completely black and white color scheme. Any and all shading found on the figure is created by raised surfaces and the shadows they naturally cast. This technique is used to outline the buttons and pockets on Boris's overalls.

Although this figure includes many of Boris's original designs, like his happy smile and tall, straight ears, the round button-shaped eyes that usually appear on Pop! figures are replaced with two “X”s - a common cartoon trope used to note that a character was dead. This unfortunate fate can be further explained by the state of Boris's chest, which is notably visible and completely disjointed. These two things allude to the possibility that this figure of Boris the Wolf recreates one of the several clones of Boris that the protagonist, Henry Stein, comes across in his attempts to escape Ink Bendy and the abandoned animation studio.

About Boris the Wolf

The original incarnation of Boris the Wolf was a cartoon character that was conceived by Henry Stein to act as a friend to Bendy the Devil. The following passages are a general overview of Boris's character.

Background

Since Boris was designed to act as a foil character to Bendy, Boris was given a laid-back and carefree personality that contrasted with Bendy’s cunning and attention-hungry nature. Although Boris does not seek attention like Bendy, this hunger is replaced with simple gluttony. In the in-universe cartoons, Boris is constantly shown either eating various kinds of food or sleeping. Boris is also shown to be quite crafty himself when given the opportunity to take food from someone else, despite his otherwise lazy nature. Despite the tricks he may play on other characters, Boris is generally considered to be a good friend, assuming food is not involved.

Other Incarnations of Boris the Wolf

Throughout the events of Bendy and the Ink Machine, the player will encounter several different characters that are derived from the original Boris character. One notable Boris incarnation is Buddy Boris, who was originally a volunteer from the studio named Daniel Lewek before being turned into a version of the cartoon wolf after an encounter with Ink Bendy. Buddy Boris accompanies the player throughout most of the game. Buddy Boris is also the protagonist for the prequel to Bendy and the Ink Machine, Boris and the Dark Survival.

Tom is another incarnation of Boris the Wolf that appears later in the game. Much like Buddy Boris, Tom was originally a human that was later transformed into a cartoon. Tom’s previous identity was Thomas Connor, the repairman of Joey Drew Studios that was in charge of keeping the Ink Machine in working order. Although Buddy Boris is a near-perfect recreation of the original Boris the Wolf, Tom has several noticeable differences. Buddy Boris, like the original Boris, is almost entirely mute. Tom, on the other hand, has a cautious personality and raspy voice that lingered even after his transformation.

Other Important Bendy and the Ink Machine Characters

Although the original version of Boris the Wolf only exists in the in-universe media and does not interact with characters that appear in the game, the various incarnations of Boris do. Two notable characters that have notable relationships with these clones of Boris are Henry Stein and Allison Angel.

Henry Stein

Henry Stein is the main protagonist of Bendy and the Ink Machine and is a former animator that worked at Joey Drew Studios. After receiving a letter from his former partner, Henry returns to the animation studio for the first time in thirty years and finds that the seemingly abandoned studio had a strange contraption called the Ink Machine. After repairing the device, Henry comes across strange creatures made of ink. Although some are hostile, several characters Henry meets are friendly and helpful. One such character is Buddy Boris, an ink clone created by Daniel Lewek. Together, Henry and Buddy Boris travel through the studio to find a way to defeat Ink Bendy.

Allison Angel

Allison Angel is an ink clone of the original Alice Angel, the third and final cartoon character designed by Henry. Like Tom, Allison Angel was previously human. She was previously known as Allison Pendle, the second voice actress that voiced Alice Angel. Allison was also married to Thomas Connor before they were both turned into living cartoon characters. Although Buddy Boris lost his personality after transforming, both Tom and Allison Angel seem to retain some of their memories.
