Nanachi Made in Abyss - Figures

Made in Abyss is a franchise that was first conceived as a manga by writer and illustrator Akihito Tsukushi and has been published by Takeshobo’s Web Comic Gamma since 2012. As of early 2021, chapters of Made in Abyss have been compiled into a total of nine tankobon volumes. In July 2017, an anime adaptation produced by Kinema Citrus began airing and continued until September. A sequel film was later announced and was first shown in Japan on January 17th, 2020. One particular character that fans enjoy is Nanachi, the wise Hollow that joins the protagonist, Riko on her quest to the bottom of the Abyss. Since Nanachi is so popular, there is a decent variety of figures that recreate their character, with a few of the most popular being the “Made in Abyss Nanachi: Demonfish Fishing Non-Scale Figure”, the “Nendoroid Made in Abyss Nanachi (Re-run)”, and the “Made in Abyss Nanachi & Mitty 1/8 Scale Figure”.

Made in Abyss Nanachi: Demonfish Fishing Non-Scale Figure

This figure from QuesQ shows Nanachi happily reeling in a Demonfish with a fishing rod. Every section of this wonderful recreation of Nanachi is painted with vibrant colors that range from the bright pinks and reds used for their clothing, to the brilliant blues and silvers of the Demonfish. Furthermore, the figure is sculpted in immaculate detail. The sculptor, Mederukin, paid particular attention to Nanachi’s fur, which is made up of many tiny tufts that add a sense of realism. The base of the figure is given similar treatment and is shaped to look like a river bank with grass and unusual plants growing on it.

Nendoroid Made in Abyss Nanachi Figure

This recreation of Nanachi comes from Good Smile Company’s Nendoroid line, a series of figures known for its cute renditions of fan-favorite characters. Although many character designs from Made in Abyss generally have a cute, chibi-like style to them, this Nendoroid turns up the level of cuteness even more by emphasizing the size of the Nanachi’s head and shrinking down their body. Like most Nendoroids, this figure of Nanachi is also articulated and includes a variety of accessories, resulting in plenty of different possible poses. Such accessories include three facial expression plates, a plate of fried Demonfish, and a miniature sculpture of Nanachi’s friend, Mitty.

Made in Abyss Nanachi & Mitty 1/8 Scale Figure

This figure made by FREEing shows Nanachi gently caressing their dear friend Mitty in a heartwarming, adorable way. The pose for this particular figure was inspired by an illustration from the third volume of the manga and perfectly portrays how much Nanachi cares for Mitty. A great amount of detail is sculpted into this figure as well, like the way Nanachi’s rabbit-like ears droop down to the side and the stitches in their outfit. The base of the figure is also made out of a soft material that imitates the look of fine grass, giving it a more realistic feel.

About Nanachi

Nanachi is a Hollow that joins Reg and Riko on their quest to reach the bottom of the Abyss in an attempt to find Riko’s mother. Here is a brief introduction to the background of the character.

Background

In Made in Abyss, there are humans named Hollows that are gravely affected by the curse of the Abyss’ 6th layer. This curse often causes the body of a person to transform into amorphous blobs, though under certain circumstances, one may still retain a humanoid shape. One known method of doing this involves taking two subjects and using a contraption to transfer most of the effects of the Abyss’ curse to one. Bondrewd performed such an experiment on Nanachi and Mitty, resulting in Mitty turning into a heavily deformed creature while Nanachi retained their humanoid form and personality.

Special Abilities

As someone that has inhabited the Abyss for an unknown length of time, Nanachi has a great understanding of the area and has impeccable tracking skills. Furthermore, they are very familiar with the local plants and animals in the 4th and 5th layers of the Abyss. This knowledge would go on to allow Reg to save Riko after she was affected by Orb Piercer venom. Aside from the skills they learned themself, Nanachi is capable of seeing the manifestation of the Abyss’ curse and is able to avoid it altogether.

Other Important Made in Abyss Characters

After Riko and Reg are attacked by an Orb Piercer in the 4th layer of the Abyss, Nanachi is the one who creates an antidote that prevents Reg from having to amputate one of her arms.

Riko

Riko is a young girl and the daughter of Lyza, a White Whistle Delver that is known by all people outside of the Abyss. She has a seemingly natural desire to learn more about the Abyss and eventually find her mother, who had set out on their “Last Dive” to the bottom of the Abyss. On one excursion in the 1st layer of the Abyss, she is attacked by a deadly creature and is saved by Reg, a boy of mysterious origins.

Reg

Reg is seemingly a young boy, yet displays traits that are incredibly robotic in nature, though his exact origin is currently unknown. After saving Riko, Reg passes out, leading Riko to carry him back to the orphanage she lives at to experiment on him. When Riko decides to make her journey into the Abyss, Reg joins her and acts much like her protector.
