With its numerous and wildly popular releases, Final Fantasy is a series every fan of Japanese role-playing games has heard of and likely played, often credited for popularizing the console RPG genre outside of Japan. It constantly tries to revolutionize the genre through its beautifully written characters and settings and unique battle systems. Its original release was for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987, famous, in part, for bringing Square (now Square Enix) out of near bankruptcy. It was created by Hironobu Sakaguchi, and the incredibly talented workforce behind it has included names like Nobuo Uematsu, Yoshitaka Amano, Tetsuya Nomura, and Hideo Minaba. Since the commercial success of that release, Final Fantasy has become not only Square Enix’s best-selling franchise, but one of the best-selling franchises of all time.
