About Ash Ketchum

Ash Ketchum is a ten-year-old boy from Pallet Town hoping one day to become the world's greatest Pokemon master. Along with his Pikachu, Ash travels the world catching new Pokemon, meeting new friends, and tackling new challenges.

Background

After oversleeping on the first day of his Pokemon journey, Ash received a stubborn, yet strangely powerful Pikachu. After some initial resistance, Ash and Pikachu became close as Pokemon and trainer. They travel together on Ash's quest to challenge and defeat the gym leaders across the regions in the Pokemon universe. Along the way, Ash meets fellow trainers who decide to travel with him. Ash often displays rash and thoughtless behavior, leading him to rush into dangerous and silly situations. However, he cares more about his Pokemon and his friends than he does himself, making him a remarkable Pokemon trainer. Ash has been the anime's main stand-in protagonist since the first anime episode in 1997.

Abilities

At the beginning of the series, Ash often stumbled due to a lack of knowledge on his Pokemon journey. With the help of others, Ash learned about type matchups, battle strategy, and the importance of caring for one's Pokemon. His learning process serves as a way to introduce anime viewers to the mechanics used in the game. His role as an educational stand-in leads to Ash suffering from a "reset" in knowledge with each new generation. However, as the series progresses, Ash has started to develop greater skill with each challenge. In the XYZ anime, he finished as first-runner up in the Kalos Pokemon Tournament. After over 20 years, Ash finally won his first Pokemon Tournament in the Sun & Moon anime.

Other Important Pokemon Characters

On his journey, Ash develops long-lasting friendships with fellow trainers everywhere he goes. While his traveling companions change with different gaming generation, Ash's original crew created the mold future companions would follow.

Misty

Misty is a water type Pokemon trainer and youngest sister of the sibling run Cerulean City Pokemon gym. Ash meets Misty on the first day of his journey when he "borrows" her bike to escape a mob of violent Pokemon. After he trashes her bike, Misty follows him and demands that he buy her a new bike or she won't go away. The gag of Ash destroying his female companion's bike when they meet continued for a few generations. Misty is brash, temperamental, and fairly tomboyish in appearance. She and Ash bicker throughout most of their time together, though it becomes more playful than angry over time. After traveling two regions together, Misty returns home to the Cerulean Gym to take over as the official Gym Leader.

Brock

Brock is the former Gym Leader of the Pewter City Gym and an aspiring Pokemon breeder. Brock joins Ash on his journey after his long-absent father returns to run the Pewter Gym and care for his large brood of children. After caring for his younger siblings for years, Brock developed a responsible and nurturing personality. However, he also has an eye for pretty girls and haplessly flirts with every girl the group meets on their journey. Brock travels with Ash longer than any other companion, sticking around for four different regions. Instead of following Ash to the Unova, Brock decided to stay behind in their home region of Kanto to begin studies as a Pokemon doctor.

Jessie

Jessie is part of one of the series main criminal groups, Team Rocket. She and her partners, James and Meowth, aim to steal Ash's Pikachu for their boss, hopefully earning a promotion in return. Due to her aggressive nature, Jessie often takes the leadership role during Team Rocket's schemes. However, the group's overall incompetence leads them to fail repeatedly as the series's comedic relief. Jessie grew up in a very poor household and often had to care for herself. As an adult, she acts very selfishly and will seemingly do anything to get ahead. Appearing in nearly every anime episode, the Team Rocket trio gained immense popularity despite their status as villains.

James

James is a member of the Team Rocket trio along with Jessie and Meowth. James's more subdued nature leads him to follow Jessie and Meowth's plans rather than stand up for his own beliefs. He grew up in an incredibly wealthy household he found suffocating, especially after his arranged engagement with the suffocating Jessibelle. He ran away from home and eventually joined Team Rocket when looking for a place to belong. Of all the series characters, James forms some of the closest bonds with his Pokemon. A gag in the series involves James suffering pain as his pokemon show him affection.
