OtapediaMarshall D Teach Blackbeard One Piece - Figures

The One Piece franchise began as a manga series that first debuted in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in July 1997. As of the beginning of 2021, the series has had over a thousand chapters serialized, which have all been written and illustrated by the series’ creator, Eiichiro Oda. The eventual success of the manga also led to an anime adaptation by Toei, which aired its first episode in 1999. This adaptation, much like the manga, is still being produced and has over nine-hundred episodes and numerous theatrically released films. With the success of the manga and anime, One Piece began spreading into other forms of media as well, like video games, novels, and, of course, merchandise.

As one of the most popular manga franchises to date, One Piece has an unbelievable amount of merchandise for fans to collect, though a particularly popular type of merchandise is the collectible figure. Although other characters like the Straw Hat Pirates have dozens of figures each, other less significant characters are still popular enough to have a small selection of figures to collect. One such character is Marshall D. Teach, who also goes by the name Blackbeard. One particularly popular figure of Blackbeard can be found in the “One Piece World Collectable Figure: History Relay 20th Vol. 3” collection.

One Piece World Collectable Figure: History Relay 20th Vol. 3 Figure

This collection from Banpresto’s World Collectable Figure line features a variety of characters from the One Piece series as small, chibi-style figures. Each figure has a unique pose that illustrates each character’s quirks and personalities as well, making it great for avid collectors. Furthermore, each figure in this collection can be purchased individually or as a full set. This particular collection includes figures of Usopp, Perona, Brook, Marco, Whitebeard, and Blackbeard.

The figure of Blackbeard has him running as he greedily smiles. Despite these figures only standing at seven centimeters (2.8 inches) tall, they are each packed with a surprising amount of detail. Blackbeard notably has a few teeth missing from his smile and is equipped with necklaces, rings, several pistols, a flask, and a black captain’s coat, which only adds to his already intimidating presence.

About Marshall D. Teach

Marshall D. Teach, who often goes by the nickname “Blackbeard”, is one of the Four Emperors and is considered to be one of the main antagonists of the One Piece series after the Battle of Marineford. The following is a brief overview of his character.

Background

Before becoming a pirate, Teach was an orphan who had always strived to become the Pirate King, no matter the cost. Since the Whitebeard Pirates were an incredibly powerful and influential group, Teach believed that joining them would be his best bet in finding the Dark-Dark Fruit, an instrumental part of his plan. Fortunately for Teach, one of his crewmates did eventually find the Dark-Dark Fruit, which led to Teach stealing it for himself, killing its former owner, and abandoning the rest of his crew.

Teach, now calling himself Blackbeard, created his own crew and purposefully waited for Ace, a fellow member of his crew, to attack him. This led to the Marines capturing Ace, eventually causing the Battle of Marineford. In the battle, Blackbeard appeared amidst the chaos and managed to steal the power of Whitebeard’s Quake-Quake Fruit. This made Blackbeard the only known person to wield two Devil Fruits at once, making him truly formidable. These events also led him to be named one of the Four Emperors.

Special Abilities

Before betraying his crew, Teach was a member of the Whitebeard Pirates’ second division, showing that he was fairly strong in combat, aside from his physical strength, Teach also has the powers of two different Devil Fruits: the Dark-Dark Fruit and the Quake-Quake Fruit. The Dark-Dark Fruit allows Teach to create and control darkness, which, in this instance, has properties similar to black holes. In other words, Teach can draw virtually anything toward himself or the darkness he creates and absorb it. This ability also allows him to nullify any Devil Fruit abilities that his opponent may have. On the other hand, the Quake-Quake Fruit allows him to conjure earthquakes that are said to be strong enough to completely destroy the world.

Other Important One Piece Characters

Two characters that are especially relevant to Blackbeard are Luffy and Whitebeard. The following is a short overview of their relationship with Blackbeard.

Monkey D. Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy is the main protagonist of One Piece and has encountered Blackbeard several times throughout the series. They first met in the Jaya Arc, where Blackbeard attempted to capture Luffy to collect his bounty before the Straw Hats’ ship was shot up into the Sky Islands by the Knock-Up Stream. Their next encounter was in Impel Down, where Blackbeard took advantage of Luffy’s infiltration to save his sworn brother, Ace. Blackbeard revealed that he was the one behind Ace’s capture, leading to Luffy attacking him out of anger and rage. Jinbe, however, made Luffy come to his senses by reminding him that they needed to escape the prison to pursue Ace.

Edward Newgate

Edward Newgate, also known as Whitebeard and the Strongest Man in the World, was Blackbeard’s captain while he was still a part of his crew. Unlike most of the members of the Whitebeard Pirates, who saw Whitebeard as a father figure, Blackbeard was only a member for his own personal gain and did not hesitate to betray Whitebeard and his fellow crewmates. After the incident, Ace was set on getting revenge, but Whitebeard explicitly told Ace to not pursue Blackbeard, as he believed it would be Ace’s downfall.
