About Yu Narukami

Yu Narukami is the protagonist and player character in Persona 4. In the games, the player can give the character any name they want. However, his official name has a dual meaning. His first name "Yu" comes from a character meaning "quiet," referencing his role as a silent protagonist. His last name "Narukami" is an oral pun referring to his ability to "become a god" through manifesting the World Persona.

Background

Typical of a Persona protagonist, Yu has a neutral personality shaped by the player's dialogue choices. However, compared to the other protagonists, Yu tends to maintain a calm, level-headed personality. His patience does have a limit, as certain events in the game's end push him to the point of violent outbursts. Also, his strong moral compass doesn't prevent him from making mean comments in certain dialogue choices.

Abilities

After entering the Velvet Room, Yu gains the ability to access his own Persona, Izanagi. His possession of the Wild Card allows him to equip and switch between Personas captured in the Midnight Channel. His Persona's ultimate form, Izanagi-no-Okami, possesses incredibly powerful elemental magic attacks as well as an ultimate Almighty attack, Myriad Truths. In Persona 4 Arena, Yu can use reversals, special moves, and SP skill attacks through awakening Izanagi.

Yu's central role in the Persona 4 storyline brings him into close proximity with the rest of the cast. Through social links, Yu deepens his relationship with characters bearing an Arcana and aids them on their own journey of self-discovery.

Ryotaro Dojima

Ryotaro Dojima is Yu's uncle and caretaker during the events of Persona 4. He works tirelessly as a detective in the countryside town of Inaba. After the loss of his wife, Ryotaro succumbs to his grief and withdraws from his relationships. His obsession with finding his wife's killer overshadows his time spent with his six-year-old daughter, Nanako. Through his confidant link, Yu helps Ryotaro come to terms with his wife's death and open up to the world and his surviving family once again.

Nanako Dojima

Nanako Dojima is Yu's cousin and Ryotaro's young daughter. Having lost her mother at a young age, Nanako developed a mature and kind personality beyond her years. Her sensitivity makes her prone to suffer for the sake of others' comfort. While she loves her father and understands his demanding job, she wishes he would spend more time at home with her. Nanako falls into peril when the antagonist targets her at the story's climax. Ultimately her fate lies with Yu and the Investigation Team's decision-making at the end of the game.

Yosuke Hanamura

Yosuke Hanamura is a member of the Investigation Team and one of Yu's closest friends. Yosuke transferred to Yasogami High School six months before Yu. His father manages the town's new department store, which put a strain on many of the existing local businesses. As a result, Yosuke faces backlash from the affected townspeople but feels that it's his connection to city life that makes him an outcast. Despite his clumsy and sometimes thoughtless personality, Yosuke can handle others' emotions well and possesses strong deductive reasoning skills.

Margaret

Margaret is Igor's assistant and the attendant of the Velvet Room. As Igor's assistant, Margaret rewards Yu for completing portions of the Persona Compendium and Social Links. Margaret tells Yu how all those who enter the Velvet Room embark on a journey of self-discovery. At the end of her social link, she plans to test this theory for herself and challenges Yu to a Persona battle. She thanks Yu for the battle and promises that should his soul ever become lost she would try her best to save him.
