Hetalia: Axis Powers is a comedy and historical series that focuses on different events occurring during World War II. The main storyline of the Hetalia: Axis Powers anime surrounds Italy and his fall from power. Despite once being one of the strongest empires in the world Italy falls from grace and becomes a coward who loves pasta. He spends time with his friends, who are other personified countries as they live through moments of world history. The series focuses on the personified countries and their reactions to various historical events, holidays, and their interactions with one another.

Hetalia: Axis powers originally began as a webcomic series written by Hidekaz Himaruya. It was later adapted as both a manga and an anime and has since received critical acclaim. In fact, both printed manga volumes have topped The New York Times best selling manga list. Despite the overwhelmingly positive reception in the western world, not everyone was pleased with its release. The anime was deemed offensive to South Koreans, gathering more than 16,000 signatures in a petition in order to have it banned. It ultimately never aired in South Korea.
