OtapediaBungo Stray Dogs - Figures

While classic literature may be thought of as boring, the creator of Bungo Stray Dogs has brought the names of famous authors to an exciting new form. The manga, featuring young adult characters modeled after classic Japanese authors, began in 2012. The supernatural mystery elements captivated fans and critics, but it’s the engaging characters that keep fans coming back to the story. In later arcs, humorous and sometimes villainous depictions of American authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald make an appearance. But the main cast, especially the main duo Atsushi Nakajima and Osamu Dazai, have the largest fanbase. Figures for these characters are in high demand, but luckily some manufacturers re-release the most popular items. Here are three of the most popular figures--and characters--for Bungo Stray Dogs: the “Nendoroid Re-Run Osamu Dazai,” the “Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple Akutagawa Ryunosuke 1/8 Scale Figure,” and the “Pop Up Parade Atsushi Nakajima.”

Bungo Stray Dogs Osamu Dazai Nendoroid Figure

Nendoroids make popular figures due to the cute, chibi versions of popular characters and the variety of poses and expressions they offer. Coupled with Bungo Stray Dogs favorite character Osamu Dazai makes an incredibly in-demand figure. The figure features his classic trench coat outfit and effect attachments for his “No Longer Human” ability. Dazai’s impish smirk and carefree grin are among the faceplates that capture the character’s complex personality. The figure also includes an accessory to pose Dazai trying to drown himself. For fans who enjoy him alive, Dazai can be posed in a relaxed lean, reading his guide to suicide book. As a fan favorite, there are many Dazai figures to choose from. However, the Nendoroid captures his spirit in a cute, well-made package that will allow fans to interact with the charismatic suicide enthusiast.

Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1/8 Scale Figure)

This figure depicts one of the series antagonists, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, as he’s seen in the movie Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple. His long black coat and ruffled shirt are handcrafted to a high level of detail. This attention to detail continues on an interchangeable left arm that allows fans to switch between two subdued yet iconic poses. Reviewers point out that the style is a nearly perfect replica of the movie artwork. Fans of the villain turned temporary ally against rouge supernatural abilities love the simple yet thoughtful construction of a scale figure. Akutagawa is adorable in chibi form, but the serious movie based figure suits him well.

Bungo Stray Dogs Atsushi Nakajima (Pop Up Parade) Figure

The Orange Rouge Pop Up Parade line allows for fans to collect more figures on a budget. While not to scale, this figure of Atsushi Nakajima still features a high level of detail on the clothing, hand-painted facial expression, and carefully selected pose. The partially opened shirt may be fanservice, but could also be built-up to Atsushi’s ability: Beneath the Moonlight. His focused expression and hand, held out as if to warn others, suggests he’ll be transforming into a weretiger soon enough. Despite being the main character, Atsushi lacks scale and non-chibi figures--most of the higher detail figures depict Dazai. This new Pop Up figure gives Atsushi the representation he deserves as the star of Bungo Stray Dogs.

Bungo Stray Dogs Series Story

Young man and orphan Atsushi Nakajima saves a drowning man, Osamu Dazai, unaware the man had attempted suicide. While arguing with Dazai, Atsushi learns that he is one of many individuals with supernatural abilities. Dazai recruits a homeless Atsushi to join a Detective Agency staffed with gifted individuals investigating strange cases in Yokohama. Due to his unique weretiger transformation ability, Atsushi finds himself the target of the Port Mafia. The hunt for Atsushi is spearheaded by Dazai’s former apprentice, Akutagawa Ryunosuke. As the fight against the Mafia heats up, more shadow organizations come after Atsushi as the secret behind these supernatural abilities come to light.

Bungo Stray Dogs Series Development

Bungo Stray Dogs began as a manga serialized in Young Ace magazine in 2012, written by Kafka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa. Asagiri started with the idea to write about many famous authors and poets as teenagers and young adults with supernatural powers. As of late 2020, the initial manga series has 19 volumes in print with North American publishing rights under Yen Press. The series received a 2 cour, 24 episode anime in 2016 produced by Studio Bones. An OVA titled “He Walks Alone” came out in 2017 before the announcement of the first theatrical film, Bungo Stray Dogs: Dead Apple, and the third anime season. The third season aired in 2019. The anime ranks consistently high in fan polls and has won second place in the Newtype Anime Awards in 2016 and 2-19 for best TV series, behind Fate/Apocrypha and Kimetsu no Yaiba respectively.
