OtapediaMr. Osomatsu (Osamatsu-san) - Figures

Osomatsu-kun was so popular after its debut in 1962, John Lennon and Paul McCartney mimicked his signature pose in a photo-op when visiting Japan. For the most part, though, the series’ popularity was limited to Japan. In 2015, an anime featuring the Matsuno sextuplets aged up called Osomatsu-san, or Mr. Osomatsu, became the first of the Matsuno animes translated into English. Each Matsuno sibling has a more distinct personality, inspiring figures of each brother individually across manufacturers. While the basic designs are the same, expressions and accessory details make each Matsuno brother feel unique. Some of the most representative Mr. Osomatsu (Osomatsu-san) figures are “figma Osomatsu-san Jyushimatsu Matsuno,” “Nendoroid Osomatsu-san Osomatsu Matsuno Re-run,” and “Osomatsu-san Diorama Figure.”

figma Osomatsu-san Jyushimatsu Matsuno Figure

This figma figure shows the silliest Matsuno brother, Jyushimatsu. He’s wearing the blue blazer with gold buttons that the Matsunos occasionally wear when attempting adult life. His first expression shows his default airheaded smile, with eyes and mouth wide, tongue in the shape of a heart. The second expression shows him with a nervous and confused expression. His pupils are larger than normal and a clouded charcoal instead of their usual black. His eyebrows are drawn in with crease lines between them and under his eyes while his mouth is a straight line. The hair includes a shine effect matching the stylized yellow ovals from the anime. The figure is fully articulated with a moveable stand and additional hands for versatile poses.

The oldest Matsuno and title character, Osomatsu, gets a chibi figure in the Nendoroid line. He wears his distinct red matsu hoodie that sets him apart from his brothers. The figure also features his red-tinted hair highlights to further distinguish him from the others. He comes with two expressions, one smiling and the other a drunken grin. This figure also comes with a blank face plate and three expression stickers for more customization. The stickers show his laughing face, a love-struck expression with heart eyes, and a comically angry face featuring more detailed artwork than the usual style. He can be posed with his favorite drink, a glass of beer, as well as skewered oden. The figure is fully articulated to pose scenes of his wild interactions with his brothers.

This diorama figure from Orange Rouge shows all six Matsuno brothers based on a shot from the anime’s opening. The sextuplets leap out of the top of a head resembling all six of them, instead with bright blue hair and stars for eyes. They each wear their signature color hoodie and pose to match their personality. Karamatsu wears sunglasses and kneels on one knee striking a “cool” pose. Todomatsu has a cat-shaped smirk with his jeans rolled up. Ichimatsu rests his head on his crossed arms on top of Karamatsu’s head. Choromatsu sits with his arms and legs crossed. Both Osomatsu and Jyushimatsu jump jubilantly, though Jyushimatsu appears to be flying above the others. The background shows six brightly colored stripes arching out vertically from the skull each with its own pattern and style.

Osomatsu-san Series Story

Osomatsu-san follows the Matsuno sextuplets: Osomatsu, Karamatsu, Choromatsu, Ichimatsu, Jyushimatsu, and Todomatsu. Ten years older than in Osomatsu-Kun, the brothers are now adult NEETS, not employed, not in school, and not receiving any job training. The brothers have unique personalities from each other. Todomatsu is the youngest and most outgoing and manipulative. Jyushimatsu is the next oldest and is the kindest yet dumbest brother. Ichimatsu is the younger middle brother, the sharp-tongued loner. Choromatsu is the older middle brother and most responsible for the six. Karamatsu is the second oldest and thinks of himself as the “cool” brother. Finally, Osomatsu is the oldest and self-proclaimed leader of the group plagued with a gambling problem. The series follows an episodic format, mostly depicting the wild schemes and situations the adult brothers get themselves into.

Osomatsu-san Series Development

Osomatsu-san developed as a spinoff of the 1962 comic Osomatsu-kun in celebration of manga artist Fujio Akatsuka’s 80th birthday. The series was produced by Studio Pierrot and aired on FujiTV from October 2015 through March 2016. It was simulcast on Crunchyroll, making it the first Osomatsu series translated into English. A game for PlayStation Vita came out in 2017. The anime received a second season which aired in 2018 and the third season in 2020. A theatrical film titled Osomatsu-san: The Movie premiered on March 15, 2019. The original manga, Osomatsu-kun, ran from 1962 until 1969 with revivals in both the 1970s and 80s. Osomatsu remains an icon of classic Japanese manga and animation.
