Devil May Cry - Figures
The Devil May Cry series inspired a gaming trend of cool heroes with super powerful weapons beating down legions of enemies. However, on its own, the series has remained a classic due to its memorable characters, particularly its hero Dante, and its gothic aesthetic. The largely male cast has inspired both action figures as well as scaled ikemen figures reflecting the wide appeal of the series. The release of Devil May Cry 5 in 2019 inspired a new wave of figures featuring the additions from the game. However, fans still appear to have a soft spot for the older teen portrayals of the main cast in Devil May Cry 3. Three figures best highlighting the Devil May Cry fandom’s taste in figures are “Nendoroid Devil May Cry 5 Dante DMC5 Ver.,” “ArtFX J Devil May Cry 5 Nero,” and “Play Arts Kai Devil May Cry 3 Vergil.”
Nendoroid Devil May Cry 5 Dante DMC5 Ver. Figure
Devil May Cry’s cool hero, Dante, looks wild even as a chibi Nendoroid in this figure. He’s wearing his trademark long red coat, which dramatically flares out from his body. The sculpting on his shirt shows the folds as it rests above his large gold belt buckle. The figure includes two face plates, a relaxed smile, and an angry shout. Both face plates feature painted creases around his eyes and a light covering of gray stubble. Accessories include his dual black and silver pistols, Ebony and Ivory, and his sword, Rebellion. His articulated elbow joints mean he can even reach back and pull Rebellion out of its sheath. Most importantly, Dante can ride his motorcycle, Cavaliere. The motorcycle features some of the most impressive detail work in the set, with the body’s demon-like texture from Cavaliere Angelo’s armor, painted tire treads, and pink headlight.

ArtFX J Devil May Cry 5 Nero Figure
Kotobukiya’s faithful recreation of Nero’s Devil May Cry 5 design shows off the company’s full sculpting capabilities. Nero stands in a powerful wide-legged stance wielding his double-barreled revolver, Blue Rose. The expert carving detail shows every buckle and seam on his long leather coat. Individual teeth are visible on the inner zipper. His knit sweater is recreated with amazing textural detail, and the gaps in the knit reveal the shirt he’s wearing underneath. Peeking out from under his coat is the Overture and Punchline Devil Breaker mechanical hands hanging from his waist. His Devil Breaker arm is equipped with the Gerbera, opened up in its deployed state. The Red Queen slung on his back beautifully displays its ornate hilt and base as well as the motorcycle handle-like trigger.

Play Arts Kai Devil May Cry 3 Vergil
Play Arts Kai brings back a very much alive young Vergil as he appeared in the prequel, Devil May Cry 3. The fully articulated figure shows Vergil in his floor-length blue coat with three coattails that move to accommodate action poses. The flourishing, white snake-like design is carefully painted along the front and shoulders of his coat. Additional, interchangeable hands allow for Vergil to equip the large arsenal of weapons included with the figure. First is his dark forged katana, Yamato, complete with the gold kurigata and yellow sagao unique to DMC:3 and DMC:4. Second is the Devil Sword Sparda in its unawakened Force Edge form, showing off the twisted hilt with skull ornamentation.

Devil May Cry Series Story
The Devil May Cry series is a hack and slash style action-adventure game by Capcom. The story largely revolves around the efforts of demon hunter Dante. Dante himself is born from a demon and human union along with his twin brother, Vergil. The main recurring conflict of the series is the threat of demon invasion on Earth. Two millenniums before the first game begins, “The Black Knight,” demon Sparda, has defeated the Demon World ruler Mundus. He stops Mundus’ planned invasion of the human world and seeks a priestess to help him seal the Temen-Ni-Gru, the final portal between worlds. He meets Eva and thus his twin sons are born. Dante faces enemies in the form of Mundus and his own brother Vergil.
Devil May Cry Series Development
Series creator Hideki Kamiya came up with the concept for Devil May Cry while researching a new Resident Evil game in 1998. The concept ventured too far from the survival horror nature of the Resident Evil series and Kamiya restructured it into an original concept. The series’ eventual gameplay derived from a bug in Onimusha: Warlords that kept enemies in the air if hit repeatedly. Storywise, Devil May Cry was inspired by elements of The Italian poet Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy. The game was released for the PlayStation 2 in August 2001 to widespread critical acclaim. A sequel, Devil May Cry 2, came out in 2003 followed by a prequel, Devil May Cry 3, in 2005. The series is credited with the rise of “Extreme Combat,’ wherein a single hero fights hordes of enemies with flashy attacks.
