Leafa (Suguha Kirigaya) Sword Art Online - Figures

The Sword Art Online franchise is a popular series that spans multiple kinds of media today but began in 2002 as a web-published novel written by Reki Kawahara. In 2009, however, the series was published by Dengeki Bunko, with Reki Kawahara still being in charge of writing. The series of light novels became so popular among readers, an anime adaptation of the series was produced and aired three years later in 2012. Since then, several sequel anime adaptations, spin-offs, video games, and kinds of merchandise have been produced as well. One character, in particular, Leafa (also known as Suguha Kirigaya), has been recreated into many different figures, a staple of otaku collectibles. Among the dozens of Leafa renditions, a few of the most popular include the “Sword Art Online: Alicization Leafa: Ex-Chronicle Ver. Limited Premium Figure”, the “EXQ Figure Sword Art Online: Code Register Wedding Suguha”, and the “figma Sword Art Online II Leafa”.

Sword Art Online: Alicization Leafa: Ex-Chronicle Ver. Limited Premium Figure

This figure from Sega’s Limited Premium figure line features Leafa in a unique outfit that was designed specifically for Ex-Chronicle, a Sword Art Online event created to celebrate its 10th anniversary. This outfit includes a stylish black and green dress with a pleated skirt, as well as a gold bangle, matching high-heels, and a ribbon that is used to tie her blonde hair into a ponytail. She also has a katana in her right hand, which also hints toward her history with kendo. The figure itself is posed standing up with one foot raised slightly higher than the other. One hand is also raised out in front of her, almost as if she were inviting the audience to the celebration.

EXQ Figure Sword Art Online: Code Register Wedding Suguha Figure

This figure features Leafa’s real-life counterpart, Suguha Kirigaya, in a beautiful wedding dress. Its design is based on a variant of Suguha that appears in one of the mobile games released for Android and iOS in 2014 named Sword Art Online: Code Register. This dress, like many others, is mainly white but does have several sections that are colored pastel green, a call-back to Leafa’s color scheme. The outfit also includes a matching white and green bouquet that Suguha gingerly holds in front of her with both hands. The outfit is also made finished off with a crown with a veil attached to it, completing the wedding aesthetic.

figma Sword Art Online II Leafa Figure

This figure from Max Factory’s well-renowned figma line recreates Leafa as she originally appears in Sword Art Online. Her outfit includes a long green and white dress, tall brown boots, and a flower-shaped hairband that she uses to tie up her hair in a ponytail. Like many other items in the figma line, this figure is highly articulated, especially in the arms and legs. This allows users to pose Leafa in a variety of different ways and recreate iconic scenes from the series. Furthermore, the optional parts included in the figure help users customize the figure even more. These extra parts are three different facial expressions, Leafa’s longsword, articulated wings, the medallion used to get Excalibur, and a hand that works with the Kirito figma figure that lets them hold hands. An articulated stand also helps users keep the figure from falling over.

About Leafa (Suguha Kirigaya)

Although they are cousins by blood, Suguha Kirigaya is the adoptive sister of the protagonist of Sword Art Online, Kirito (Kazuto Kirigaya). Together, they were raised by Suguha’s mother and grandfather. Growing up, both Kirito and Suguha were forced to learn kendo by her grandfather. After Kirito loses interest in kendo, Suguha steps up to her grandfather and promises to work enough for both of them so Kirito can pursue his own interests without her grandfather intervening. Her role in the series was rather limited in the Aincrad arc. However, she became a much more prominent character after Kirito began playing ALfheilm Online. Here, she acted much like a guide for Kirito, as he knew next to nothing about the world he had just thrust himself into. After she realizes that Kirito is Kazuto, she becomes conflicted with her feelings, but eventually works through them and comes to his aid as an ally.

Other Important Sword Art Online Characters

After the resolution of the Fairy Dance arc, Kirito introduces Leafa to the other female friends that have helped him get through the Aincrad arc, namely Asuna, Silica, and Lisbeth. This group gets along surprisingly well and its members are often seen spending time with one another at the Dicey Cafe in the real world. Leafa, Silica, and Lisbeth are also the main characters in Sword Art Online - Girls Ops, one of the Sword Art Online spin-off series.
