OtapediaBlack Butler - Figures

Black Butler stands out as one of the definitive Victorian gothic manga series. The dark tone, supernatural elements, and unconventional leading duo hooked fans upon its release. However, as the mystery behind the Phantomhive family's fate builds and more characters reveal their true intentions, long-time fans remain enthralled with the story. Black Butler's gorgeous character designs lend to numerous intricate and beautifully carved figures. These are three of some of the most gorgeous Black Butler figures: "ArtFX J Black Butler: Book of Circus Undertaker," "Cu-poche Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic Ciel Phantomhive," and "G.E.M. Series Black Butler Sebastian Michaelis."

ArtFX J Black Butler: Book of Circus Undertaker Figure

This scale figure from the master sculptors at Kotobukiya depicts the Phantomhive household's key informant. Undertaker stands atop a crumbling chess board tipping his hat. Always giggling, Undertaker flashes a mischievous smile. He holds his imposing Death Scythe in his left hand. The scythe handle features a human skeleton, including a ribcage, spine, and skull. Each vertebra and tooth is clearly and realistically defined. A thorny vine wraps around the skull at the blade's base. His intricate outfit has been fully replicated as it appears in the Noah's Ark Circus arc. Delicate paintwork recreates each of the six mourning lockets on his hip. His eyes peek out from underneath the brim of his hat revealing the long scar running across his face. Key details include the prayer beads around his neck, the fabric effect of his scarf, and his long, black nails.

Cu-poche Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic Ciel Phantomhive Figure

Ciel Phantomhive looks almost harmless in this adorable chibi figure from Kotobukiya's Cu-poche line. He wears the brown coat and shorts seen in the Book of the Atlantic promotional material. His sleeves and sailor-style collar crisply painted brown and white accent lines. Ciel also has his trademark cane and eyepatch. His eyepatch can be removed, revealing the Faustian Contract mark on his eye. Notably, he wears his family heirloom ring on his left thumb and Phantomhive crest ring on his right hand. The figure includes three interchangeable faceplates: a serious face, a smile, and a blushing expression. Several points of articulation make the figure highly posable. Magnets in Ciel's feet also increase his stability when displayed.

He removes his left glove with his teeth, smirking with a sidelong glance. His narrowed red eyes seem to glow against his pale skin, framed by his dark bangs. The tails on his long jacket flip up behind him, mimicking the direction of his tousled hair. The textural details throughout his simple butler's suit add dimension and elegance. Pleats on his dress shirt rest under a broad tie. The double-breasted buttons feature ornate carvings. Silver chains weave throughout the figure silhouette, including the small chain on the Phantomhive Crest lapel pin. His pocket watch has a fully painted watch face in a flowery, Victorian-era design.

The Black Butler Series Story

On his tenth birthday, Ciel Phantomhive lost his parents and dog in a malicious house fire. The attackers captured him and sold him into slavery to a demon-worshipping cult. After suffering years of abuse, Ciel summons a demon to help him exact revenge on his abusers and his parents' murders. They form a contract and once Ciel gets his revenge, the demon will eat his soul. Ciel names the demon Sebastian Michaelis after his deceased dog. Ciel returns to the London social circle as a 13-year-old earl and replaces his father as Queen Victoria's "Watchdog." As the Queen's Watchdog, Ciel investigates crimes in London's underworld as Queen Victoria deems appropriate.

The Black Butler Series Development

Black Butler is written and illustrated by Yana Toboso. The manga debuted in the magazine Monthly GFantasy in October 2006. In October 2008, the series received its first anime adaptation produced by A-1 Pictures. The second season, Black Butler II, included another child and demonic butler pair not present in the manga. A second anime adaptation, Black Butler: Book of Circus, aired over the 2014 summer season. Unlike previous adaptations, this season followed the manga closely, taking its storyline from the "Noah's Ark Circus" arc. An animated film adapting the "Luxury Liner" arc, Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic, premiered in 2017. The series has a large, dedicated fanbase. The character Sebastian Michaelis is particularly popular with female anime fans.
