OtapediaMobile Suit Gundam Wing - Figures

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing was the first Gundam series for much of the English speaking world in the 1990s. Featuring a Bishonen (beautiful young man) art style and flashy mobile suits, it was a huge success in Japan and overseas. Over the top action and larger than life mobile suits provide the thrills while a strong undercurrent of political strife carries the narrative. Initially aired in Japan on TV Asahi, Gundam Wing spanned 49 episodes from April 1995 until March of 1996. In the west, Gundam Wing was first aired on Cartoon Network from March until May of 2000. A host of spin-offs, adaptations, and even a theatrical sequel were born of the immense popularity the series enjoyed. In Japan mecha and giant robot figures have been popular for decades; here are some popular Gundam Wing figures: The cannon fodder “Robot Spirits #122 Leo”, frightening “HG Endless Waltz 1/100 Gundam Deathscythe Hell Custom”, monstrous “MG Gundam Epyon Ver. EW 1/100th Scale”, and of course, the eponymous “Endless Waltz Wing Gundam Zero EW”.

Robot Spirits #122: Leo Option Set Figure

In the Gundam Wing universe, the Leo is the father of all modern mass-produced mobile suits. Derived from the nearly impossible to pilot Tallgeese, it was the first mass-produced mobile suit used by OZ for space combat against colonial forces. It wasn't until the Gundam units were created that the Leos lost their dominance on the field. Olive green paint and 5.5” tall. An icon of the Gundam Wing universe and a homage to the original Zaku.

Among all of the units in Gundam Wing, few if any were as terrifying as the monstrous Epyon. Based on the Tallgeese and the other Gundam units, Epyon’s primary function was close-quarters combat. Wielding a whip-like heat rod and a laser sword attached to its energy supply, Epyon was a very dangerous opponent. Epyon has featured in many spin-offs and video games often as a villain. The Endless Waltz version of Epyon shows the classic red color scheme and extended heat rod in all its menacing glory. Articulated for a number of devastating poses.

The Gundam Wing Story

With space colonized by multiple colonies the inhabitants of Earth unite to form the United Earth Sphere Alliance. Corrupted by members of the secret organization Romefeller Foundation, the UESA began oppressing the space colonies utilizing military might. Tired of the UESA treatment, five scientists from OZ (the military branch of the UESA) abandoned their posts after developing the first mobile suit, Tallgeese. Drawing up a superior design (that would later become Wing Zero) the scientists then split up and took a copy of the plans to different colonies. Each built a Gundam unique to themselves using the Wing Zero plans. Operation Meteor was set into motion as all five Gundams were sent to Earth piloted by specially trained teenage pilots. The mission, to end the UESA’s tyrannical oppression of the colonies.

The Gundam Wing Series Development

Mobile Fighter G Gundam was the previous series in the Gundam franchise and had some influence on the development of Gundam Wing. After working together for a week to meet Bandai’s conditions, the writers and directors managed to come up with designs for all of the suits, and most of the storyline. Unlike the previous Gundam series, the focus was more on drama than on action, adding a new element to the formula and broadening the potential viewer demographic. Despite its initial success and gaining a larger female audience than any series before, the directors decided against making a continuation of the story until the movie Endless Waltz was directed and released in Japan as OVA in 1997 and theatrically in 1998.
