About Ryunosuke Tanaka: Background

Tanaka started playing volleyball in elementary school. After joining the Karasuno volleyball team, Tanaka instantly fell in love with the team's manager, Kiyoko Shimizu. He proposed to her on the spot and she declined.

Tanaka has a loud, hot-headed personality. He often gets scolded for his unruly behavior on the court. Regarding school and other typical high schooler responsibilities, Tanaka tends to slack off. However, he works incredibly hard to improve his volleyball skills, feeling the pressure of being the up-and-coming ace. Tanaka sometimes serves as a mentor to his underclassmen to help them regain confidence or motivation during a tough game.

Tanaka regards himself as an average player without remarkable skill. To compensate, he works on sharpening his attacks. His most valuable skills are his dedication and his mental strength. Several times throughout the series, Tanaka shows remarkable follow through and keeps the ball in play in seemingly hopeless situations.

Due to his loud personality and average technique compared to his teammates, Tanaka often finds himself the target of the opponents. Skilled servers pinpoint his blindspots and blockers attempt to shut him out to break his spirit. Tanaka pulls through these difficult positions without much falter, knowing that his stability is crucial for Karasuno's success.

Tanaka was one of the only second years to stay on the team during the tough reign of Ukai Sr. As a result, he has a strong bond with the third years and the other second year who stayed, Yu Nishinoya.

Yu Nishinoya

Nishinoya is a second year at Karasuno and the team's libero. Like Tanaka, Nishinoya is known for his rowdy, sometimes disruptive personality. However, during games Nishinoya is much quieter, only focusing on the ball and the next play.

Tanaka and Nishinoya are extremely close and often hang out outside of practice. They share a love of things "cool and manly" and a lack of academic skills. The two are also fairly girl-crazy, as Nishinoya chose to attend Karasuno due to the cuteness of the girls' uniform. Neither of them has much success with wooing ladies but hope to prove their heroics at Nationals.

Kiyoko Shimizu

Kiyoko Shimizu is a third year and the Karasuno volleyball team manager. She is very quiet and reserved, only emerging from her shell with the other third years and first year manager, Hitoka Yachi. She is considered extremely beautiful, which often puts her on the receiving end of unwanted attention. Tanaka and Nishinoya have designated themselves the Kiyoko Defense Squad.

Tanaka claims he fell in love with Kiyoko at first sight. A typical rebel, Tanaka felt apathetic about high school and continuing volleyball. However, when Kiyoko, running late, jumped into the gym he felt an instant shift. Instead of greeting her, he asked her to marry him. She declined. While Kiyoko often scolds and ignores Tanaka and Nishinoya's worship of her, she holds a soft spot for Tanaka.
