Koushi Sugawara Haikyu!! - Nendoroid

Haikyu!! proved the enduring popularity of the sports genre in manga. Despite its huge cast, each character has carved out its own fan base among readers and anime viewers. Karasuno's third year setter, Koushi Sugawara, proves how even the benched players earn the love of readers. His debut Nendoroid, "Nendoroid Haikyu!! Koushi Sugawara (Re-run)," received a re-release due to high demand.

Karasuno's "Mr. Refreshing" earned a much-deserved re-run of his adorable Nendoroid figure. Sugawara wears his standard uniform and includes three faceplates: a gentle expression, blushing smile, and toothy grin. Arm parts allow fans to pose him in action on the court and cheer on the sidelines. Notably, fans can recreate his hand signal pose from his appearance in the first official match against Seijoh.

About Koushi Sugawara

Koushi Sugawara is a third year student at Karasuno High School and the volleyball team's vice-captain. He was formerly the team's official setter before Tobio Kageyama joined the team.

About Koushi Sugawara: Background

Sugawara is a helpful, well-meaning senior with a refreshing personality. Usually, he is gentle and kind to his teammates and acts fairly responsibly. However, he also has a mischievous side, first shown through punching his teammates when playing as substitute setter. Sugawara is also proud, building up Kageyama to tell future reporters that Sugawara taught him everything he knows.

Despite his cheeky side, Sugawara is prone to fear and shame for his actions. Prior to the series, Sugawara blamed himself for a loss that resulted in Asahi Azumane’s departure from the team. Sugawara harbored this guilt and admittedly hid behind Kageyama's overwhelming skills. However, after Asahi's return, Sugawara regains his pride and determination to help his friends make it to the national stage.

About Koushi Sugawara: Abilities

At the beginning of the series, Sugawara was a solid setter with a very straightforward technique. However, his time on the sidelines sharpened his observation skills. This gave him a better perspective to devise new plays. Sugawara is also an effective teacher, as he created a set of hand signals easy enough for Hinata to quickly understand.

To compete with high-level players, Sugawara broadened his arsenal of experimental plays. This includes his two-setter technique with Kageyama. During this play, Kageyama and Sugawara switch positions after an opponent's serve. Kageyama then joins the rest of the team in a synchronized attack with five possible spikers. Sugawara also participates in synchronized attacks and uses his targeted serves to throw off the opponent's defense.

As vice-captain, Sugawara has a close relationship with the majority of Karasuno's volleyball team. His mentorship and rivalry with Kageyama helps them both become better setters and players overall.

Tobio Kageyama

Tobio Kageyama is a first year at Karasuno High School. He is the volleyball team's official setter and is often regarded as "the genius first year setter." Kageyama struggles with teamwork and communication, which led to his disastrous middle school volleyball career despite his talent. His extreme precision and timing created his minus tempo quick attack with Shoyo Hinata.

Despite his higher technical skill level, Kageyama respects Sugawara as a setter. He looks to Sugawara to learn better communication and accommodating techniques on the court. In turn, Sugawara is often tasked with calming and redirecting Kageyama when his ego gets in the way. Overall, they teach each other valuable skills and exhibit good teamwork when using Karasuno's two setter strategy.

Daichi Sawamura

Daichi Sawamura is a third year at Karasuno High School. He is the volleyball team captain and a starting wing spiker. Daichi has a natural talent for leadership and a famously scary temper. His dream since middle school has been to play volleyball in a national tournament.

Daichi and Sugawara are close friends. After meeting their first year, the two, along with Asahi, swore to play together at the Spring Nationals. With Kageyama's replacement of Sugawara, this dream seemed impossible. However, Daichi and Asahi resolved to keep their team in competition until Sugawara had a chance to play alongside them.

Karasuno High School

Karasuno High School is a public high school in Haikyu!! located in Miyagi Prefecture. The school used to have a well-respected reputation as a powerhouse in high school volleyball. However, a few years before the series began, the team's reputation plummeted. Now they are known as "the fallen champions" and "the flightless crows".
