About Black Rock Shooter: Characters

The main characters of Black Rock Shooter are Mato and Yomi, who befriend each other. The two also exist in an alternate dimension as Black Rock Shooter and Dead Master. After learning they both love the book “Lil Bird Li’l Bird Colorful Colors," they become friends.

Strength, Black Gold Saw, and Chariot are also central characters in the anime. Strength’s counterpart is Yuu Koutari, while Chariot’s other counterpart is Kagara Izuriha. All of the characters heavily intertwine in their respective dimensions. Problems start arising when the interactions start occurring across the two dimensions.

Black Rock Shooter Series Development

Black Rock Shooter was first created by illustrator Ryohei Huke, depicting a mysterious black-haired girl with blazing blue eyes. Based on this character, anime, OVA, video games, and songs have been created.

Black Rock Shooter Series Development: Production

Black Rock Shooter was first published as an illustration by Ryohei Huke on the online community site Pixiv in 2007. It then inspired a Vocaloid song of the same name, released on June 13th, 2008. Due to its popularity, an OVA was also produced and released in September 2009. It was then adapted into an anime in February 2012, with the Vocaloid song used as the opening theme song. While having its differences from the OVA, the anime was heavily based on the OVA.

A role-playing game titled “Black Rock Shooter: The Game” was released on August 25th, 2011, and multiple four-panel comic strips were also released on the 4-Koma Nano Ace magazine between April 2011 and March 2012. These media works are based on Black Rock Shooter's character but are all set in their universes.

Black Rock Shooter Series Development: Reception

The Vocaloid song of the same name was posted on the video site Nico Nico Douga and had gained 2.2 million views in a year. A very uncommon phenomenon at the time. This popularity was the reason for the franchising of this concept and the consecutive release of anime and video games. The popularity is still present, with an anime titled Black Rock Shooter: Dawn Fall is set to release in April 2022.

In 2012, the Black Rock Shooter anime was awarded the Technical Achievement in Broadcast Animation at the 65th Motion Picture and Television Engineering Society of Japan Awards.
