About Alphonse Elric

Alphonse Elric is the second protagonist of Fullmetal Alchemist and Edward's younger brother. He lost his physical body by committing the greatest taboo in alchemy. Now his soul is bound to a suit of armor. He and Ed travel across the country searching for the Philosopher's Stone to return their bodies back to normal.

About Alphonse Elric: Background

Al is passive, kind, and gentle-natured. His subdued personality serves as a foil to his brother's louder behavior. Al is also very compassionate toward other living beings. In the 2009 anime, he has a tendency of rescuing cats and keeping them in his armor. His love of living things reflects his respect for life and appreciation of experiencing the physical world after losing his body. He desperately craves the warmth of human life and occasionally struggles with remembering his own humanity.

Al and Ed grew up in the countryside. They had little interaction with their father, who left home when they were young. Instead, they spent time with their mother and their closest neighbors, Pinako and Winry Rockbell. After their mother's death, Al and Ed struggled to find a place of belonging. By chance, they encountered a strong alchemist, Izumi Curtis. They begged Izumi to take them as apprentices to develop their innate childhood skills. After finishing their apprenticeship, Al and Ed attempted the forbidden task of bringing their mother back to life.

About Alphonse Elric: Abilities

Due to his training with Izumi, Al has considerable strength and fighting technique. Even before adopting his armor body, Al always bested Ed in hand-to-hand combat. His armor body allows Al additional physical endurance, resistance to bullets and other weapons, and invulnerability to extreme temperatures. Al also does not need to breathe, eat, or sleep. However, this loss of human vulnerabilities weakens Al's mental state. Additionally, any damage sustained to the blood seal inside the armor would release his soul forever.

Al also possesses fairly advanced skills as an alchemist. He can transmute items quickly and possesses a deep knowledge of transmutation circles. Al eventually gains the ability to transmute without a circle at all, like Ed. The method in which he gains this ability varies between storylines, each affecting his physical abilities in different ways as well.

Other Important Fullmetal Alchemist Characters

Al's most significant relationship in the story is with his brother, Edward Elric. However, Al derives his motives and strengths from several other characters throughout his life.

Trisha Elric

Trisha Elric is Al and Ed's mother. She was a beautiful and kind woman with a beloved presence in her family and community. She died prior to the story's events due to sudden illness. Her death, and her son's reaction to her death, set off the main storyline.

Despite her husband's prolonged absence, Trisha loved him and maintained a happy household with their sons. Al and Ed researched alchemy as children simply because it made their mother smile. In his physical body, Al takes after his mother while Ed resembles their father.

Izumi Curtis

Izumi Curtis is a master alchemist and martial artist. She and her husband, Sig, own a butcher shop in a southern town. A recurring gag involves Izumi performing amazing alchemical or physical feats then proudly declaring she is a simple housewife. She served as Al and Ed's mentor after their mother died.

Izumi met Ed and Al by chance traveling with her husband. After witnessing Izumi's impressive alchemy skills, the two children begged to take them on as students. Reluctantly, Izumi agreed and put the boys through the same spartan training she endured. As a result, Al and Ed fear and respect Izumi more than most characters in the series.
