OtapediaAsuka Langley Shikinami Neon Genesis Evangelion - Figures

Asuka Langley Shikinami (and her TV series counterpart, Asuka Langley Soryu) has become an immensely popular character ever since the debut of Neon Genesis Evangelion in October 1995. The series’ unique mecha designs and deconstructive nature regarding the mecha genre caught the eyes and attention of many viewers around the world, which resulted in an incredible amount of merchandise themed around the series being created. In 2019, the TV series and several of its movies were added to Netflix’s catalog, which acted as a catalyst that put the series back into the limelight once again. As a result, several new types of merchandise were designed, manufactured, and sold once again. Such merchandise included apparel, models, and figures. Many fans seem to be drawn to figures of Asuka, almost as if her confident personality and attention-seeking nature demands her fans to focus on her. Although a wide variety of figures have been released in the past, three of the most popular and recent figures available for purchase or pre-order include the “Figuarts Mini Rebuild of Evangelion Asuka Shikinami Langley” figure, the “Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Asuka Shikinami Langley Limited Premium Figure”, and the “Ichiban Figure Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Asuka Shikinami Langley” figure.

Figuarts Mini Rebuild of Evangelion Asuka Shikinami Langley Figure

This chibi-style figure is produced by Bandai and has Asuka appear in the Evangelion 3.0 version of her fire-red plugsuit. The torso of the suit is mainly a bright shade of red, but it has numerous accents that give it plenty of variety. For instance, the chest of the suit is colored orange and has the numbers “02” written in black text, which refers to her designated Evangelion Unit, Eva-02. Other blue and white accents can be seen on the torso, while the arms and legs feature a stylish combination of red and black. A black eyepatch also covers Asuka’s left eye in this Figuarts figure, a characteristic unique to Asuka’s character in the Rebuild series. The figure comes in a standing position and has several points of articulation, allowing the user to customize the pose to a certain degree. Extra parts like various arms and a clear stand are also included for added customizability.

  • Release Date: September 2020
  • Manufacturer: Bandai

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Asuka Shikinami Langley Limited Premium Figure

This figure by Sega also shows Asuka in her distinct red plugsuit, but features much more normal proportions when compared to the previous Figuarts figure. The figure’s pose has Asuka casually resting one of her arms on her side while the other is lifted up and reaches over the back of her head. Her face displays a calm, gentle smile while her black eyepatch is partially covered by her long red hair, which flows down halfway down her back. While the figure does not include any extra parts for added customization, it does come with an iridescent base to let the figure stand freely. Asuka’s plugsuit is also diligently painted by hand to capture as many minute details as possible.

  • Release Date: November 2020
  • Manufacturer: Sega
  • Specifications: Painted, non-articulated figure made with PVC plastic

Ichiban Figure Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Asuka Shikinami Langley Figure

This figure is also produced by Bandai and has Asuka in her bright red Rebuild Eva-02 plugsuit. It has similar orange, white, and blue accents around the chest and abdomen and dark red and black design around the arms and legs. While the previous figures featured Asuka in a calm, relaxed pose, this Ichiban figure displays her in a proud, confident post with her legs spread apart with her hands on her hips. Her face shows her eyes fully focused and staring at something straight in front of her while she wears a stern frown. Asuka’s hair also flows behind her as if she were standing right in front of a breeze. This figure has no articulation or extra parts, but is painted partially by hand to help create a deeper, more intricate level of detail when it comes to her skin and plugsuit.

About Asuka Langley Shikinami

Asuka Langley Shikinami is the Rebuild counterpart of Asuka Langley Soryu from the TV series, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Both characters are given the title of the “Second Child”, which refers to her position as the pilot of an Evangelion Unit. Although the two characters share a nearly identical proud and competitive personality, there are some subtle differences between the two, especially in the third Rebuild movie. Asuka Shikinami sports an eyepatch after her failed test experiment with Eva-03 and, like many characters, begin holding a grudge against Shinji after the events of the second Rebuild movie. In terms of unique design, Asuka has red hair and stark blue eyes and is often seen in her unique red plugsuit. Asuka is also likely one of the characters that popularized the “tsundere” trope, making her an incredibly popular choice for fans of the series and anime in general.
