Puck is an Artificial Spirit created by Echidna. His normal appearance is that of a small cat although he has shown the capacity to take on other forms such as a humanoid version of himself when he and Emilia met Subaru for the very first time or his massive Beast of the End form. Puck’s fur is primarily grey with silver accents and he wears a gold ring in his left ear which flops down. His eyes are represented differently across different media being black in the light novel and blue in the anime. He is sometimes seen with a purple messenger bag slung around him.
Puck was created by Echidna around 400 years prior to current events in the story. Puck unfroze Emilia and joined her side as a friend and mentor seven years before the start of the election. As a part of his contract with Emilia, he can only manifest physically between 9 am and 5 pm. However, he can use Emilia’s Od to manifest himself outside of this period if needed. He drains a large amount of Emilia’s mana in order to manifest himself. Puck made a vow to Echidna that prevented him from forming a contract with Emilia. However, he broke this vow in order to save himself and Emilia from the effects of his battle with Melakuera, the former Great Spirit of Fire. Puck’s memories of his past were sealed as a result of his vow to Echidna being broken.
Personality
Puck has a generally upbeat personality and is often in a good mood especially when around Emilia and Subaru. He is quite tolerant of people touching him and in fact seems to encourage fawning over his small form. Puck is quick to befriend someone if he deems the other person trustworthy (aided by his empathic abilities) as seen when he and Emilia first met Subaru. Even in a subsequent loop when he had just met Subaru, Puck quickly came to friendly terms with him.
However, Puck’s demeanor changes completely if Emilia dies. While still calm and rational, he loses all regard for anyone and shows particular contempt for those associated with her death. In numerous loops, this results in a transformation into his Beast of the End form.
Relationships
Emilia - Puck treats Emilia as a daughter and enjoys acting as a father figure to her. He initially met her seven years before the Royal Selection where she was frozen in the Elior Forest and he thawed her out. In the beginning of the series Puck was contracted to Emilia and bound to her service. After events in Arc 4, he broke the contract in order to allow Emilia the power to pass a trial.
Natsuki Subaru - Puck’s empathic abilities immediately gave him a favourable impression of Subaru. Puck and Subaru are friendly towards each other, evidenced by Puck being willing to teach Subaru how to use magic.
Beatrice - Beatrice has a very positive impression of Puck, calling him ‘brother’ and likely alluding to the fact that they were both created by Echidna around the same time. She likes to fawn over him and has been known to monopolize hours of his time snuggling together in her room. She cares so much about Puck’s opinion that Subaru has convinced her to perform certain actions by invoking his name.
Hector - Despite his anomalous existence being unknown to most future generations, Puck is aware of Hector.
Echidna - Echidna made Puck into an artificial spirit over 400 years ago. However, Puck has no memory of this, as his memories of the past were sealed upon making a contract with Emilia.
Abilities
Magic - Puck is capable of using Fire, Water, and Yin magic. It is mentioned that he is also able to use other types of magic.
- Puck has specifically shown that he is capable of casting Shamak; a Yin magic which causes the target to lose sense of their surroundings, though they still retain a sense of themselves and what is happening to them.
- In various fights (while fighting alongside Emilia) Puck has cast ice spears in a variety of strengths, patterns, and functions. He has rained icicle spears onto an area, created pillars of ice to trap and block opponents, and used the ice to freeze enemies to the ground.
Mana Drain - Puck is able to drain a person’s mana through physical contact and is the only character other than Beatrice that has been shown to be capable of this.
Curse Removal - Beatrice claims that Puck is able to detect and remove curses.
Empath - Puck is able to read the surface-level thoughts and intentions of people around him which he uses to judge their character. He demonstrated this when he first met Subaru.
Telepathy - Puck is able to telepathically communicate with anyone who has an affinity for spirits.
Beast of the End - Puck can transform into this form when enraged. His appearance in this form changes to become a 20 meter long, cat-like beast with golden eyes. He requires a large amount of mana which he absorbs from his surroundings in order to maintain this form. This causes the area in which the mana is absorbed to freeze.
