Meili Portroute is introduced as a child in Irlam village along with the group of children that were under threat in Arc 2. In actuality she is a member of an assassination organization that would later attack the Mathers mansion in Arc 4. She looks like a young village girl with olive green eyes. She was initially depicted with brown hair in the light novel but has since been updated to have blue hair to match her anime incarnation which she keeps in a braid that sits on one of her shoulder. She tends to wear a simple blue dress with a light blue collar. She was softly spoken and shy when she first met Subaru, but in truth is a fairly energetic and friendly girl which she showcased once she left the organization. She is fond of dolls and
History
Meili was raised from birth by Demon Beasts who also taught her survival skills. She was a feral child in the wild when one day she was approached by Elsa Granhiert who 'recruited' her by killing all the Demon Beasts and bringing her back to the organization. Being raised in the wild, Meili lacked civilized sensibilities including speech and her youth and impressionability meant that she absorbed most of those mannerisms and tics from Elsa. In fact as Elsa taught her the basics of life, Meili began to also treat her as her purpose for life.
Some time later Meili appears in Irlam village around the time when Subaru appears there. She is a part of the group of children who get taken into the woods by the Wolgarms and is in fact the one used as bait for Subaru to go further in, however she does not reveal any of her capabilities or intent at this time. She is able to keep her identity a complete secret at this point and lays low until later in Arc 4 where she reveals herself as an accomplice to Elsa.
While Subaru is still dealing with matters in the Sanctuary, Elsa is hired by Roswaal to kill members of the Mathers mansion and brings Meili along for assistance. Throughout multiple timelines the two manage to kill most (if not all) of the people in the mansion through a combination of Elsa's monstrous strength and the force of numbers that Meili is able to bring to bear. Even in the eventual final timeline where Subaru manages to survive, the mansion is lost in the fight. Ultimately though Elsa fails in her contract and Meili seeks refuge with Subaru and Emilia as she fears the repercussions from the assassin organization.
She is a prisoner for a time and lived underneath the Mathers mansion (in a fair amount of luxury) but she eventually joins the party when they travel to the Pleiades Watchtower. During the travel she proved to be useful at avoiding confrontations with Demon Beasts in their path and eventually through a lot of trial and tribulation managed to find their way inside of the tower itself. When the group cleared the trial of and revealed the Taygeta library Meili begins searching for the book of Elsa's memories in the hopes of learning more about the concepts of grief and the value of one's life. Later on, she partakes in the fights that break out across the tower but the conclusion of which has not yet been decided.
Relationships
Elsa Granhiert - As Elsa was the one who brought Meili into civilization from the Demon Beasts, Meili treats her with a fair amount of adoration and emulated things such as speech patterns and behaviours from Elsa. This was an obsessive relationship as Meili considered Elsa her reason for living. Following Elsa's death she has vowed revenge on the killer.
Natsuki Subaru - Subaru saves Meili during the events of Arc 2, though she probably didn't need saving. Later when trying to get Meili's assistance, he was able to get her to actually talk to the group by giving her a panda like doll that she named Big Bear Cat.
Shaula - Meili quickly becomes attached to Shaula during her short time at the Pleiades Watchtower and calls her "naked onee-san".
Abilities
Divine Protection of Magic Manipulation - This ability allows her to control hornless Demon Beasts and makes her a Demon Beast User. This ability does have limits though and she can't control beasts like the White Whale. Further, she can also be incompatible with some but can still exert some amount of control over them.
Miasma Aura - Meili emits a miasma like aura and is the reason why she was kept underneath the Mathers mansion for a time. It is currently unclear if this is related to her divine protection.
