About Nagatsuki Tappei

Nagatsuki Tappei was Born on March 11th, 1987. He is the creator of the light novel series Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu. He's the main producer of the manga and also supervised production of the anime.

Tappei and Re:Zero

Tappei began writing "Re:Zero because he wanted to create Emilia." He began writing the series online, which gained enough traction to move to a printed light novel. Re:Zero continued to rise in popularity so much that he was able to transform it into an anime. Tappei explains that while he was very happy at the success and popularity of Re:Zero at this time, he was also worried that it was too good to be true and that the bottom could drop out at any moment.

Even though he was creating the characters and the story of Re:Zero, Tappei struggled visualizing it in his mind, so watching it as an anime, he discovered it along with the audience with thoughts like "Ah, is that how that was?"

When asked once who favorite Re:Zero character is, he responded with "There's no doubt it's Emilia. Emilia is first place, everyone else is second place. This is unshakeable. After all, Re: Zero started because I wanted to write about Emilia."

Since he's created Subaru (the main character from Re:Zero) and his story, he feels very connected to him and his deaths. He states that the thought of being eaten by animals is very frightening, so when Subaru died that way, it's left an impression that has stayed with him.

There are three light novels that Tappei attributes to getting him started as a writer: Ragnarok (which gave him the chance to start writing light novels), Dances with the Dragons, and The Ending Chronicle (for its writing style). His favorite manga of all time is Dai's Big Adventure.

Has visited Taiwan twice. He was an anxious the first time he visited since he had never been there before but received a warm welcome from his fans there, which helped calm his nerves. He was much more excited during his second visit.

While in Taiwan for his second time, a reader and fan of his work drew a picture of Tappei and her together. Tappei was so flattered, he posed for a picture with her and her drawing. The two of them re-enacted the poses that she drew in the artwork for the picture. He then signed the drawing for her and posed for more pictures.

When writing, Tappei likes for his protagonist to "overcome obstacles and come out on top." As an example, doing this, Subaru will grow and become more popular.

One of Tappei's favorite things to eat is Taiwanese beef noodle soup, but he doesn't enjoy sticky tofu due to its strong smell.

When writing Re:Zero, Tappei and Re:Zero Producer Iketomo worked together often to improve the story. When he first started writing Re:Zero, he was mainly doing it for fun. Iketomo helped him transform his writing into something that appealed to readers more. Because of this, Iketomo's suggestions are very important to Tappei.

When going from a web novel to a book novel, Tappei says the limitation on words and making sure the reader can understand important details is the biggest challenge. On the web, he could write as much as he wanted. For example, he could go into more detail about the challenge Subaru was currently facing or what he is thinking at any given moment.

Tappei has stated that Yui Horie's performance of Felix, his "joking sense," is the most memorable to him, but Yusuke Kobayashi (voice actor for Subaru in Re:Zero) is the most important one. Without his voice, we wouldn't fully understand the character and nature of Subaru.

He typically leaves the anime artists alone, trusting them to do their work, but he checks in from time to time to make sure the novels and anime are still in sync.

Tappei says that if Subaru ever becomes filled with sorrows or despairs, it'll be time to kill him. If he doesn't kill him then (since he might be so mentally/physically broken to rise again), then it will become too late to do so.

Tappei got the inspiration for Subaru's dragon's name, Patrasche, and the ringtone for his phone from the anime A Dog of Flanders from 1975.

In 2016, Tappei worked in a meat shop preparing and processing meat and occasionally as a cashier. During this time, since he wouldn't leave work until around 6 pm and would still need to eat dinner, he wouldn't usually start writing until around 9:30 pm and goes to bed around 2:00 am. He will often plan where the story of Re:Zero is going to go while processing meat. At this time he had aspirations of becoming a full-time writer, but wanted to continue working at his meat shop until that time so that he could continue to come up with ideas.
