Garfiel Tinsel is a member of the Emilia Camp who has also been called Gorgeous Tiger and the Shield of the Sanctuary. He has short and spiked blond hair, green eyes, and a large cross scar on his forehead. He dresses in light clothing that emphasises freedom of movement for combat in the form of a black vest, black arm guards, black pants, and a purple cape around his waist. Garfiel speaks crudely, often shortening words or using contractions to combine words.
History
Garfiel is the son of a half beast human father and a full human mother - Raela Thompson - which makes him a quarter beast human. Him, his sister Frederica, and mother wandered during his very early life before being picked up by Roswaal and given a home at the Sanctuary. Raela left to look for and return with her missing husband though she never returned after that. When Garfiel was four years old Frederica also left to work in the Mathers mansion and the two would not see each other until 10 years later. Some time in the intervening years he attempts to undertake the trial of the Witch of Greed's Graveyard and fails.
During the events of Arc 4 Garfiel meets Subaru for the first time. There is a lot of distrust between the two over the following events due to the influences of Roswaal, Lewes, and the fact that Subaru was covered in the scent of the Witch. After several extremely antagonistic encounters in a couple of loops Subaru decides to convince Garfiel to be his ally. Garfiel falls for a multi layered plan that ends with Ram being able to defeat him after he transforms into his Beast Form. In that weakened state he faces off against Subaru and loses again.
At this point the demi human is convinced to attempt the trial again. He realizes the truth of why his mother left, confronted his past, and resolved to help those who need his help from then on. He emerged from the trial committed to helping Subaru and started referring to him as 'boss'. With Garfiel in tow, Subaru returns to the Mathers mansion where Elsa is lying in wait to attack Subaru. Garfiel faces off against her and pushes her unnatural regeneration to its limit that ultimately leads to her death even though he doesn't deliver the killing blow.
A year after the events at the Sanctuary are resolved he travels with Subaru and the others to Priestella where he helps against the Sin Archbishop incursion.
The author has stated that Garfiel is scheduled to be featured in Arc 7.
Relationships
Natsuki Subaru - Subaru assisted Garfiel in facing his past and overcoming his fear of the outside world. In spite of their previous disagreements (that have actually come to blows), they have become close friends, with Garfiel viewing Subaru as a worthy leader and calling him 'boss'.
Ricardo Welkin - Ricardo was suspicious of Garfiel at first, but soon warmed up to him after Garfiel saved Mimi from death.
Ram - Ram helped him to face his past and overcome his fear of the outside world. He is hinted to have romantic feelings for her, and often tries to impress her.
Frederica Baumann - Frederica is Garfiel’s sister, who left the Sanctuary when Garfiel was only 4 years old. She cares for him greatly and maintained communication with him via letters every once in a while. As children when they fought she often sent him flying, ignoring the seven year age difference between them.
Abilities
Divine Protection of Earth Spirits - While Garfiel has his feet on the ground, his body is guarded by a layer of protective earth. He is also able to cause the ground to cave in, he is also less affected by earth magic, and has an accelerated rate of recovery from injury and exhaustion.
Flowing Battle Sense - Garfiel's preferred style of fighting relies on instinct and his superior demi human physique rather than finesse or refined skill.
Beastification - Garfiel is capable of either partially or fully transforming himself into a large golden tiger, thanks to his demi-human ancestry. He typically avoids performing a full transformation, as it makes him act without reason.
Healing Magic - Garfiel is capable of using magic to heal his wounds and the wounds of others.
Garfiel wields dual shields in combat.
