Otto Suwen is a merchant who joins the Emilia Camp as their Head Internal Affairs Official after the events at the Sanctuary in Arc 4. He has shoulder length grey hair, and blue-grey eyes. He wears a long-sleeved green shirt, black pants, and brown boots. He wears a dark green cloak tied with a red ribbon over that as well as a green hat with a feather. Overall he has the look of someone who is used to travel as befits his previous occupation as a merchant. Despite that, Otto is typically timid and skittish, though he is loyal to people that he considers friends.
History
It is said that Otto was born under an unlucky star. His Divine Protection caused him to be ridiculed since he sounded so strange when using it. He left his hometown of Picoutatte around four years before the start of the story. Otto first meets Subaru in the first loop of Arc 3 where he is hired to take Subaru to the Mathers mansion. Subaru is dropped off partway though as Otto's Earth Dragon Verhoe gets a bad vibe from the boundary to the Mathers estate. Later on in a subsequent timeline Otto is hired yet again as part of a merchant group to help smuggle the Irlam villagers to safety before an attack by the Witch Cult. In this timeline the caravan of merchants run afoul of the White Whale and Otto actually sacrifices Subaru in an attempt to save his own life.
Later on Otto appears once again in the final timeline of the Arc. A bag of fire magic stones were left hidden in a wagon leaving Emilia and the village children with her in danger. Otto volunteers to speed through the forest trail with his wagon and aids Subaru in catching up with the caravan of evacuating villagers. He initially does this to establish a business deal down the line but this also serves as the catalyzing reason for him to join the future adventures of Subaru and co.
After that, Otto follows Subaru and Emilia into the Sanctuary and gets embroiled in the events of Arc 4. Despite (or perhaps because of) his lack of personal stake in the histories of Roswaal, Echidna, Garfiel, and others in the Sanctuary Otto was present in the background of the entire sequence to offer advice and perspective to Subaru. He helps concoct plans of action and even ends up being able to delay the mighty Garfiel until Ram arrives to end the fight. A year after that he is present as part of the Emilia camp during the gathering in Priestella. There his mercantile know-how helps during the diplomatic encounters and he even pulls his weight during encounters with the Sin Archbishops.
Relationships
Natsuki Subaru - Subaru offered Otto a job as the Head Internal Affairs Official for the Emilia Camp, and saved him from financial troubles. Although Subaru often makes Otto the subject of his jokes, they are good friends, and Otto is loyal to him.
Emilia - Otto relates with Emilia’s experience of being ostracised, and thinks highly of her because of it. Emilia sees him as dependable, and appreciates the advice he gives her.
Ricardo Welkin - Ricardo helped to ease Otto’s nerves and gave him the motivation to not give up while he was being held captive during Arc 3.
Abilities
Divine Protection of Soul Language - Otto is able to use this ability to communicate with any living creature. Otto doesn’t often use this ability, as it draws suspicion to him because he talks in the native language of the creature.
Magic User - Despite not having the best aptitude at it, Otto is capable of using earth element magic. He is known to use the spells Dona, El Dona, Ul Dona, and Al Dona (though he struggles with it).
Merchant Skills - Otto was a merchant before his time with Subaru and Emilia. He has enough acumen to survive by trade though luck is not always on his side.
Otto is often accompanied by his Earth Dragon Verhoe for long distance travel and is capable of running for up to three days without resting.
