Anime S2 Music - Re:Zero video 1

Opening Theme

The opening theme for the second cour of the series is titled "Paradisus-Paradoxum". It is written, arranged, and performed by MYTH & ROID. It was released on August 24, 2016 on CD. It also included an instrumental version of the song as well as "theater D" and an instrumental version of "theater D".

"Paradisus-Paradoxum" Meaning

The song explores the toll on psyche that living against the direst circumstances can change a person, paint a life bleak and gloomy, and drive against the wall and over to insanity. In the end, the singer finds herself laughing evilly at the mirror, and succumbs to the new reality seen through the broken labyrinths of a broken mind, the paradise of sorts where nothing is as it seems, and most of it black. In the context of the anime, this is the overarching arc of 'growth' for Natsuki Subaru across this portion of his story as he will be pushed to his limits and he teeters on the verge of breaking completely.

Ending Theme

The ending theme for the second cour of the series is titled "Stay Alive". The CD of the single was released on August 24, 2016. The songs within the CD are performed by Takahashi Rie and Minase Inori, the voices of Emilia and Rem respectively. The songs are written and arranged by Heart's Cry.

"Stay Alive" Meaning

In this song, Emilia at first sees her circumstances as a puzzle with a part missing, somehow. She moves on while knowing she is fated to pass by everyone, to just live on and walk alone and unexpectedly lonely.

Then Emilia sings about the unstable ground and, being lost in a development beyond her ken with no clear path. She stresses her loneliness.

Finally, Emilia mentions that a clear breeze sends her heart off-balance, and keeps praying for a connection. The wind likely symbolizes the new factor in her life, Natsuki Subaru.

Episode 14 Ending Theme

Episode 14's ending theme of the Re:Zero anime season 1 was "theater D" performed by MYTH & ROID. It was a special insert song that played over the ending of the episode as Subaru finally finds his way to the Mathers territory with Otto's help but is simply too late to help anyone. Irlam village is littered with bodies and when he finally makes it to the mansion, he finds Rem's body broken and dead near the entrance.

"theater D" Meaning

This song describes the beginning of a terrible and tragic time. It is a portent for bad things and hard times to come. Within the context of the show, this marks the beginning of a tremendously trying time for Subaru as he is forced to confront a seemingly hopeless and insurmountable series of problems and the true beginning of his problems within this arc of his story. This is a foreshadowing of many lives (and deaths) of pain and suffering for Natsuki Subaru.
