Beasts in Re: Zero kara hajimeru isekai seikatsu

Summary

The fantastic world of Re: Zero kara hajimeru isekai seikatsu is biologically extremely diverse. It has quite a few creatures our own world does not, and those creatures do not even owe their existence to any immediate magical intervention. Even so, since magic is so pervasive and omnipresent, all living things have a mana Gate (think chakra in yoga) and can interact with mana stones (lagmite), as well as suffer a loss of mana.

At least every hundredth creature is born with a magical boon called Divine Protection, which may take countless different forms. It is common knowledge that the world itself bestows those blessings drawing from a mana pool called Od Laguna, and any blessed creature is innately aware that it has such a gift. Conversely, nobody knows how to physically reach the location of that mana pool, if that is even a place at all, and the majority of information available on it is pure conjecture.

As mana itself is a very diverse concept, many phenomena are applicable to those who have command of or attumenement to mana — including laws and limitations governing mana flow and shape, various interactions with mana stones, creature summoning and spirit realm interactions, and much, much more. All this makes ReZero a world allowing for a myriad variations in living creatures, frankly unexpected and mostly unexplored abilities, and quite powerful individuals that make history all on their own, no armies needed.

We will observe those that are not deemed to be sentient and are not present in our world here. The sentient creatures are classified as Races and are a topic for a separate review.

Creatures

Earth Dragon

Earth Dragons were created by the Divine Dragon called Volcanica, the current guardian of the Kingdom of Lugnica, pact-bound with Farsale Lugnica the last "Lion-King", upon his meeting with Reid Astrea and Shaula in the city of Flanders where he blessed the city grounds.

It makes sense, then, that these flightless dragons are not at allopposed to the sentient races and are often domesticated in about the same capacity as horses would be in our world. As a number of species, they are rather varied and thus versatile in the utilitary sense, presenting a line-up suitable for all sorts of terrains, conditions, and tasks. The species include:

  • Flanna (フランナ種): the ubiquitous jack-of-all-trades species;
  • Eliq (エイリーク種): the cold-resistant species;
  • Agaress (アガレス種): the species suitable for desert environments;
  • Diana (ダイアナ種): a rarer feisty and prideful (but seemingly extremely loyal) species that Natsuki Subaru's gift steed Patrasche belongs to.

All Earth Dragons receive the birth-time blessing, commonly known as Divine Protection, of Wind Evasion (風避けの加護 kazeyoke no kago). As shown by Patrasche's example, that allows them (and a pulled Dragon Carriage) to ignore the resistance of air when needed, granting them wind protection and higher possible running speed.

Water Dragon

A lesser species of dragon, it is an aquatic creature with an elongated snake-like body and short limbs. Its skin is blue and lubricated, and its head dragon-like with long whiskers. It is domesticated as well, but to a lesser degree of success.

The Water Dragons' Divine Protection shields them from negative water effects.

Winged Dragon

These lesser dragons are avian, and are widely considered to be impossible to domesticate, although certain people in Vollachian Empire have seemingly found a way. It would make sense to assume that they have a species-wide Divine Protection of some kind, as well.

Liger

Ligers look not unlike the common wolves of our world. They do not inhabit Lugnica and are generally uncommon everywhere but are often seen in Kararagi. They can be domesticated for menial labor just like the Earth Dragons, and are used by the Fang of Iron to carry things and do battle. Ligers are weaker than the Earth Dragons, but are more deft, speedy, enduring, and more capable in a fight.

Falo

A falo is a calm animal with higher stamina than either an Earth Dragon or a liger, but are not much use in warfare. They are widely used for transportation in all domains.

Special Cases

Demi-Beasts

These creatures are not like the other in the way that they probably should not be considered "living", per se. Described as a combination of meat and metal, having melee weapons stuck in their bodies as opposed to wielding them, and often missing body parts while being nonplussed about the whole ordeal, they could perhaps be best described as war zombies. They are made by Capella's Authority.

Black Water

Another fringe case is Black Water — actually the venom of an ancient Demon Beast Kurohebi which has its own will of sorts. It is unwise to come into any contact with this creature.
