Synopsis

This arc has not yet been completely finished in the light novel series. The following synopsis is mostly based on the web novel. As such, it should be considered as a first draft and not canon to the story.

Due to the length of this arc (which is not even complete yet), the synopsis is broken into two parts. For the first part, click here.

The Next Layer

Despite their apparent success no one is able to find the way to the next layer. As they contemplated their next course of action Shaula was forced to reveal five secret rules pertaining to the protection of the tower:

  • Shaula would kill them if they tried to leave the tower without reaching the first layer's library.
  • Shaula would prevent them from violating the trial's rules
  • Shaula would prevent them from disrespecting the libraries
  • Shaula would prevent them from damaging the tower itself
  • And finally Shaula became cagey stating that there wasn't a fifth rule.

Emilia begins to understand the kind of person who would make the tower like that and suggests that they way up is on a lower layer. True enough they find the stairs below. The second layer looks similar to Taygeta before the trial's completion and consists of an empty white space with a sword stuck in the center of the room. Grasping the sword caused a man with long red hair to appear. The red haired man handily dispatches Julius and Anastasia using only chopsticks. Emilia technically passes his trial they then begin to argue semantics on whether that means that the group has passed the trial as a party. Eventually the party retreats to the safety of the fourth layer to discuss things further. They eventually learn that the man is in actuality Reid Astrea who is supposed to be dead.

Revelations and Mysteries

With no clear way forward past Reid, the party rests for the night. Subaru finds Anastasia who is in reality still being possessed by Echidna since the events in Priestella. She begins wondering about Subaru's true identity after Shaula's actions. Julius finds the two and learns that Echidna has been in control the entire time. Subaru seems to come to a plan for getting past Reid's trial and heads off on his own to enact it. Unfortunately Subaru wakes up the next morning with no memories since coming to the new world.

Mysterious Circumstances

The team venture back into the Taygeta library to search for clues to what happened but fail to find anything that could tell them what happened. Echidna-stasia theorizes that Subaru's memory loss could be a punishment from the tower for potentially breaking a rule. Together they decide that the best way forward is to attempt to clear all of the tower's trials. The group ascends once more but Subaru is mysteriously pushed down the long set of stairs and dies.
He continuously walks into a series of deaths over the next few loops and begins to break down from the strain of it all. Eventually he hits a breaking point and attempts to escape the tower which causes the tower's defense system to activate and result in another death. Returning yet again his mental state continues to deteriorate as events in the tower spiral out of control and eventually the tower itself seems to collapse into the sands with most of the party inside dead.

The Hidden Sin Archbishop

Waking up once more Subaru seems to have a regained some of his composure from the events of the previous loop. The party once more investigates the Taygeta library and this time find the book of Reid Astrea. Subaru reads the book and is transported into a strange area with a little girl. She reveals that they are in the hall of memories and that she is a Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, Louis Arneb. After some conversation the confessed that she was the one responsible for taking his memories. She fostered an existential fear of killing his current self if he took his old memories back, but Subaru manages to push past her mind games with the help of an image of Rem. As Subaru searched for a way out of the hall of memories Louis volunteerd that Ley and Roy, the other two Sin Archbishops were on the way to the tower.

Natsuki Subaru

Events spiral rapidly out of control as terrible enemies begin appearing in front of Subaru one after the other. He is able to learn that the final rule Shaula hid was that "It is not forbidden to destroy the trials", but ultimately he still lacks the ability to cause significant change against so many obstacles and opponents. As he reaches his limits once again he senses a presence within the library and is able to find a book with his name written in kanji.
He reads the book which shows him all of the events leading up to his first death at the hands of Elsa in a storage shack. Unlike the previous times when he read a book of the dead there is no delineation between the experienced memories and his sense of self with his Return by Death ability. He quickly realizes that the book is in fact part of a series and he begins reading all of them, reliving every life, loop, and death he has experienced since he got transported from Japan.
Eventually he gets to the final book and comes face to face with another version of himself. They begin talking and reveal that Subaru had initially gone looking for Reid's book but ran afoul of Louis instead.

To Be Continued

The story is as of yet uncompleted to this point.
