Oni Village - Re:Zero

The Village

Roswaal's maids Ram and Rem come from an oni village. The twin girls were born and raised there until they were around eight years old. The village itself prided itself on the purity and strength of their oni blood. It was steeped in superstition and the collective villagers saw the birth of twin oni girls who only had one horn each as a bad omen and a taboo. By the laws of the village, the two girls were to be sacrificed to preserve the strength of the oni village.
The chief at the time - Setanta - prepared to carry out his duty and was prepared to kill the two baby girls. The rest of the village either supported this or stood by passively watching. Even the girls' parents didn't raise any objections to the proceedings. At the last moment before the killing blow could be struck, the elder twin Ram unleashed a tremendous power that startled everyone present. Stunned by such a display from someone so young, the girls were spared.
As Ram grew, she lived up to the expectations of the village and came to be known as a once in a century prodigy with extraordinary mana manipulation talent and a powerful body to match. She wowed the villagers with her displays of magical prowess as she grew stronger and they seemed to forget they even ever tried to have her killed.

The Slaughter

Unfortunately, this idyllic seeming everyday life did not last forever. 10 years before the start of the story, the entire village is attacked in the night by the Witch Cult. Everyone in the village barring the twin girls were summarily slaughtered. For her part, Ram fought viciously and took the lives of many of the attackers with her tremendous power, attempting to avenge her fallen villagers. Rem was asleep at the time of the assault but is awoken by the sounds of combat. Bleary-eyed and sleepily stepping out from her home, she sees her sister desperately fighting far too many opponents. She freezes as she sees this and some of the Witch Cult attackers attempt to strike the younger twin down.
Ram leaps to the defense of her sister and manages to save her, but in the process leaves herself somewhat open and suffers the loss of her horn. As things begin looking paricularly grim for the sisters, Roswaal arrives on the scene and handily dispatches the remaining Witch Cult attackers with his magic, saving the sisters. He takes them in as maids to his household. Much later, during the events of Arc 4, it is revealed that Roswaal actually knew about and could have stopped the attack on the village from happening in the first place but chose to let things play out the way the had for the sake of his own personal plans.

Notable Members

Setanta

Setanta was the last chief of the Oni Village. He was elderly in appearance with brown eyes and grey hair that goes down to his neck. He tended to wear a montsuki haori jacket similar to many of the other members of the tribe. Superstitious and law abiding, he grimly took the responsiblity of removing the taboo of twin Onis himself and during the ceremony revealed his full oni form with two large grown out horns. However, he quickly relented upon Ram's show of force and ultimately accepted the girls as members of the village. He is voiced by Tezuka Hideaki in Japanese and Ian Alden (John Snyder) in English.

Quark

Quark was Ram and Rem's father. He was an adult oni with blue eyes and hair, and was seen wearing a blue kimono in the brief flashback showing the family together. He was a loving parent to the girls and cares for both of them greatly. He was especially proud of Ram's gifts, but also takes care to support Rem, though both him and his wife don't really seem to understand their younger daughter's internal struggles. Even so, he reacted very positively when Rem challenged herself to be more like her sister and cooked dinner. He is voiced by Chiba Susumu in Japanese and Keith Silverstein in English.

Temae

Temae was Ram and Rem's mother. She was an adult oni who had pink eyes and pink hair that was tied neatly behind her head and extended to her back. She wore a green kimono in the brief flashbacks showing the family together. She was kind and supportive to both of her children, especially proud of Ram's talents but also very conscious of encouraging Rem to be the best she can be. She is voiced by Kimura Akiko in Japanese and Erika Harlacher in English.
