Theresia van Astrea is a former Sword Saint and hero of the Demi Human civil war. She is a tall woman with blue eyes and long red hair that she sometimes wore in a ponytail (mostly when she was fighting). She wore hair accessories such as hairclips or ribbons. Theresia favoured loose dresses in when not on duty and otherwise wore the uniform of a knight of Lugnica. She was kind, open-minded, and social, tending to put others' wishes ahead of her own. She always disliked the burden of being the Sword Saint but carried out her duties anyway.

History

Theresia was born to Veltol and Tishua Astrea. During her childhood she avoided the use of the sword, fearing the harm she could cause because of the Divine Protection of the Death God that she was born with. However, at the age of 12 the title of Sword Saint passed on to her from her uncle Fribal van Astrea. Still, she refrained from actively using her skills. Later she meets a young Wilhelm as he trains during the early mornings in an abandoned ruin. The two often met and talked during this time and Theresia constantly inquired about his reason for using the sword. At first he answered that it was all he had, but over time his own resolve hardened and he declared that he used it to protect others.
One day after Wilhelm had attained knighthood, he found out that Demi-Humans were attacking his hometown. Theresia accompanied him on his journey back. While Wilhelm fought valiantly, he couldn't overcome the sheer number of opponents in his path. Theresia stepped in at the last moment and saved his life, killing all of the enemies in front of them. Back in the capital, Wilhelm confronted her about keeping her skills a secret. She handily defeated him to which he said he would not return to the training site. For her part Theresia had found her own reason for fighting and took part in the war and played a key role in ending it.
Years later she was being celebrated for her accomplishments in the war when a hooded Wilhelm barged into the ceremony and challenged her to a duel. He is able to defeat her and swears to shoulder the burden of the Sword Saint in her place now that she was the 'weaker' one. They share their first kiss and eventually get married. They have a son together - Heinkel Astrea - who in turn fathers Reinhard van Astrea.
14 years prior to the start of the story, the great White Whale is sighted. Theresia takes the place of a frightened Heinkel and leads a group of knights into battle with the Demon Beast. Unfortunately at this point she loses her powers as the Sword Saint and is defeated. At this point it is still unclear if she loses because the blessing leaves her or if her powers were passed on following her defeat. Either way, a young Reinhard would inherit them at this point.
A bereft Wilhelm vows vengeance on the White Whale for her and actually even succeeds with the aid of Subaru. During an attack by the Witch Cult on Priestella they brought Theresia back to terrorize the city. Wilhelm attempted to face her and put her down for good, but he was no match for her. In the end Reinhard stepped in and mercilessly cut her down since he considered her nothing more than a defiled corpse. Theresia found her final moments of clarity in the arms of Wilhelm where they confessed their love for one another.

Relationships

Wilhelm van Astrea - Wilhelm and Theresia were married and lived happily together until she dies during a hunt for the White Whale. He was extremely devoted to her even then and extracted vengeance in her name. When she is finally struck down by Reinhard after being brought back, she dies in Wilhelm's arms.
Heinkel Astrea - Heinkel is Theresia's son who inherits the Holy Sword Astrea from her.
Reinhard van Astrea - Reinhard is Theresia's grandson via Heinkel and is the one who delivers the killing blow to her living corpse.

Abilities

Divine Protection - Theresia possessed two Divine Protections in her life:

• Divine Protection of the Death God - She was born with this ability which curses anyone hurt by her slashes with wounds that are unable to heal. It's strength is based on proximity and she is able to reopen wounds that were inflicted by her.
• Divine Protection of the Sword Saint - She inherited this ability when she was 12. With this she gained unparalleled skill with the sword. Her style with the sword is described as a beautiful deadly dance that employed acrobatic flourishes.

Equipment

Dragon Sword Reid - She used this sword in her capacity as the Sword Saint and it refused be drawn unless facing off against opponents that it deemed worthy.
Holy Sword Astrea - Her favoured sword which was later passed on to her son Heinkel.
