Reinhard van Astrea is a member of the Lugnica Royal Guard and is a personal knight to Felt. He is also the current inheritor of the Sword Saint title. He has short red hair and blue eyes. He wears a modified version of the Lugnica Royal Guard uniform, even when he is not on active duty.
Personality
Reinhard is known as the ‘knight among knights’ due to his bravery, kindness and strong sense of justice. He only uses his sword if absolutely necessary, as he does not believe it is morally right to injure a normal person unless needed. Reinhard tries to keep his appearance as a good-natured person, and is easily offended when people suggest that he is dangerous due to his immense power. He always tries to solve conflict without needing to resort to violence, often giving enemies the option to surrender so that he does not need to kill them.
History
Reinhard is the grandson of Wilhelm van Astrea and Theresia van Astrea. He inherited the powers and title of the Sword Saint when he was five years old. Theresia died due to this, as she lost her Sword Saint powers while fighting the Hakugei. Wilhelm blames Reinhard for his wife’s death because of this.
Reinhard later joined the Lugnican Royal Guard, where he met Julius and Felix.
6 months before the events of arc 1, Reinhard travelled with Julius and Felix to Vollachia in order to meet the current Vollachian emperor, Vincent Vollachia. While in Vollachia, Reinhard successfully thwarted Balroy Temeglyph and Gramdart Holstoy’s attempt at a coup.
Relationships
Felt - As Felt’s personal knight, Reinhard is willing to do anything he can to allow Felt to win the Royal Election.
Subaru Natsuki - Reinhard and Subaru are friendly towards each other, with Subaru even bragging to the Witches of Sin that he personally knows the current Sword Saint.
Theresia van Astrea - Reinhard was very close to Theresia before she died, and he became quite upset upon hearing news of her death. He seems to have come to terms with her death though, as he does not hesitate to kill her when she is resurrected by the Witch Cult.
Wilhelm van Astrea - Wilhelm and Reinhard do not get along well with each other due to Wilhelm blaming Reinhard for Theresia’s death to the Hakugei. However, Wilhelm made attempts to fix the relationship between them after they successfully defeated the Hakugei. Wilhelm later changed his mind about this, after seeing Reinhard show no remorse while killing the resurrected corpse of Theresia. Wilhelm began addressing Reinhard by his full name after this, indicating that he no longer has a personal relationship with Reinhard.
Abilities
Divine Protection - Reinhard is able to possess any Divine Protection he wants, with no limitations. Some of the abilities granted by these Divine Protections include being stronger during certain times and weather conditions, mastery of all weapons and fighting styles, and the ability to communicate telepathically. He has also inherited a unique Divine Protection, that being the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint, which brings out his maximum martial skill, greatly increasing his combat capabilities.
Defective Gate - Reinhard’s gate is unable to release the mana stored within his body, rendering him unable to release mana in order to use magic. However, he has a very high mana capacity, allowing him to absorb large amounts of mana without harming himself. He can use this mana to enhance his physical abilities. He is also able to stop others from using magic if he absorbs all of the mana around them.
Pseudo Spirit Affinity - Reinhard attracts the attention of small spirits, which attempt to heal him if he is injured.
Dragon Sword Reid - As the current Sword Saint, Reinhard is able to wield the Dragon Sword Reid, an incredibly powerful weapon. Dragon Sword Reid can only be drawn against opponents that it believes are worthy. Reinhard has only been shown to use this weapon twice, the first time being against Cecilus Segmunt, and the second time being against the resurrected corpse of Theresia van Astrea. The sheath of the sword is also very durable, as it was able to withstand the force of Regulus Corneas’ Authority of Greed.
