Pre-story - Re:Zero
The Great Calamity - 400 years before the beginning of the series, the Witch of Envy went on a rampage, destroying nearly half of the world, before being sealed by Shaula, Reid Astrea, the great sage Flugel, and the dragon Volcania. The Witch of Envy also defeated the other 6 witches of sin around this time.
Four-hundred years ago - The current king of Lugnica, Farsale Lugnica, makes a pact with Volcania in order to protect the Kingdom of Lugnica from the Vollachia Empire.
One-hundred years ago - Elior Forest in the Kingdom of Lugnica is attacked by the Sin Archbishop of Greed, and the Witch of Vainglory. Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti absorbs the witch factor of sloth in an attempt to protect the inhabitants of the forest, but is instead tricked into killing Fortuna by the Witch of Vainglory, driving him insane and leading him to become the Archbishop of Sloth. Emilia freezes the forest in self-defence, trapping herself and a majority of the forest’s elven inhabitants in ice.
Approximately fifty years ago - In Lugnica, a decade long civil war occurred between the humans and demi-human population of the nation, known as the Demi-human War. Prior to this, the racial tensions between humans and demi-humans was already not favourable, due to the Witch of Envy being a half-elf, leading to the idea that demi-humans were heretical. The war started as a small battle between a human village and a demi-human village, but became a national conflict after the representatives of the human village were assassinated by an unknown party, leading both sides to blame each other.
Two notable figures from this war are the Sword Saint Theresia van Astrea, and the ‘Sword Devil’ Wilhelm van Astrea (known then as Wilhelm Trias). The Demi-humans eventually gave in, surrendering to the human forces. This war worsened the already strained relationship between humans and non-humans in Lugnica.
Approximately forty years ago - Stride Vollachia summons Valgren, the black dragon, to attack Piccoutatte, one of the regional capitals of the Kingdom of Lugnica. The dragon killed many royal knights before it was slain.
Around this time, Wilhelm van Astrea fought Kurgan, one of the Vollachia Empire’s strongest warriors. Wilhelm was victorious in this battle, though he sustained heavy injuries.
Fourteen years ago - The First Great Expedition took place, in which a company of knights led by Theresia van Astrea were sent to defeat the Hakugei, which had recently appeared. The mission was a complete failure, and Theresia was among those killed in the battle.
At the same time, Reinhard van Astrea inherited the Sword Saint’s title and abilities. This was rather poorly timed however, as his inheritance of these abilities meant that Theresia was stripped of her powers whilst engaged in battle with the Hakugei.
Around this time, an infant member of the Lugnican royal family was kidnapped by a group of thieves who snuck undetected into the castle. These thieves were allowed to escape by an unknown elite member of the Lugnican royal guard. It is suspected that the child that was kidnapped that day was Felt due to her carrying the gold hair and red eyes unique to the Lugnican royal family.
Ten years ago - The oni village was destroyed by members of the Witch Cult. All of the inhabitants were killed, save for the twin sisters Rem and Ram, who were rescued by Roswaal L Mathers.
Seven years ago: The Day of Red Earth and Sky - Puck unfreezes Emilia, unintentionally attracting the attention of Melakuera, the current Great Spirit of Fire. Puck successfully defeats Melakuera, inheriting the title of Great Spirit of Fire.
Two years ago - The entire Lugnican royal family began to die of an unknown disease, leading to a total lack of a ruling family in Lugnica, as well as the destruction of the pact between the Lugnican royal family and Volcania. The Council of Elders begins searching for potential candidates, leading to the royal selection. Crusch Karsten is the first candidate to be discovered, with Emilia, Priscilla Barielle and Anastasia Hoshin coming soon after.
