In popularity votes, he typically will consistently rank in the top five. His popularity lies in his very "normal" persona. He is both flawed and average in all aspects, but is the reason so many love and relate to him. About Subaru Natsuki: Background

Subaru is the only child of Kenichi and Naoko. As a child, Subaru idolized his father, a very popular, charming, and talented man. He grew up wanting to be like his father and loved the praises he received as he accomplished different challenges.

He worked hard to live up to his father's expectations from a young age. However, as he grew older and his horizons expanded, he started to meet more people becoming more competent and physically able than himself. This led to him facing his boundaries and made him feel like he was disappointing his parents and that everyone would leave him due to his failures. This perspective leads Subaru to take extreme measures to maintain himself as the center of attention. However, this backfires and instead leads to more people leaving him. Finally, it reaches the point where he feels suffocated if anyone compares him to his father. It further leads to Subaru skipping school and his parents seeing him as worthless.

While his slightly depressing outlook has dramatically shaped his character and made irrational decisions, he is still very loyal and kind. He is incredibly loyal to those close to him and is willing to do whatever it takes to help them. This side of him is seen multiple times in Lugunica, the world he is taken to. But unfortunately, his insecurities often take the better of him, and he makes a fool of himself, pushing those people further away.

About Subaru Natsuki: Abilities

After being transported to Lugunica on his way back from the convenience store, he finds himself almost instantly killed. However, he is revived a couple of moments later. This leads to Subaru finding out he has the Return by Death power.

The Return by Death is one of the most well-known powers in the series and allows Subaru to return a "save point.". There is no limit on this ability, and it will enable Subaru to use this ability multiple times to cheat death. Despite no limit on the ability itself, there are penalties that Subaru may undergo. Firstly, he cannot reveal his power to others and can be silenced by the Witch and die. If he tells Emilia, she will also die, and it will also increase the density of the Witch Factor. This means any Demon Beast in the area would reach him in seconds.

Subaru is also able to use two Authorities, Sloth and Greed. He calls his version of the Authority the Invisible Providence. He is able to move an invisible hand from his chest and extend it telekinetically. He gained this power after he killed the Skin Archbishop of Sloth. His Authority of Greed is named Cor Leonis. He can take on the physical and mental burdens of people and can eliminate injuries and pain during combat. However, in return, he receives the same wounds on his body.

Other Important Re: ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Characters

Despite being a loner with no friends, as the series goes through, we start to see Subaru's character develop and see him form friendships in Lugunica. In particular, he is close with Emilia.

Emilia

Emilia is one of the first people Subaru meets and falls in love with at first sight when he is transported to Lugunica. She is also one of the first people to show kindness towards him. Due to this, he devotes himself to protecting Emilia, with no care for what happens to himself. This allows him to grow as a person, and ultimately, Emilia starts to reciprocate his feelings. The two grow to form a powerful bond.

Ram

While at first, the two may not seem close they have a strong friendship. While Ram does often throw discouraging insults toward Subaru, she was in charge of teaching Subaru about his daily duties and even took the time to teach him how to write. She was also one of the few people to stand up and vouch for Subaru when talks of him being a spy arose.
