About Echidna

Echidna was the Witch of Greed and heavily connected with Roswaal and Beatrice. She is both a supporting character and one of the antagonists to appear throughout the series.

About Echidna: Background

While Echidna seems to be kind and polite at first glance, she also has a very childish side. She was initially a tutor for young Roswaal. From then on, she started researching immortality by transferring her soul into another person's body. Further, she started gathering humans and demi-humans to create a sanctuary that could support the barrier.

While she may seem like a villain obsessed with immortality and someone unable to understand the feelings of others, after the deaths of Typhon, Minerva, Daphne, Carmilla, and Sekhmet, Echidna collected their souls and went to the Sanctuary. She took them with her due to the importance and close connection she had held with them. While she does have a caring side, she does have no problem lying and deceiving others to obtain the knowledge she wants. Despite being called a monster by Subaru, she continues to act like an average individual.

About Echidna: Abilities

Echidna once could use the Authority of Greed. After returning as an Omega, she no longer had access to the Authority of Greed. When she had access to the Authority of Greed, she could use the Book of Wisdom. The Book of Wisdom is a white book that lets her draw knowledge from the world's memory. The book can draw information from both the past, present, and future. However, despite the ability it gave Echidna, she disliked using the text as it skipped the learning process she enjoyed. She also created replicas of the book and gave them to Beatrice and Roswaal.

Apart from her Authority of Greed, Echidna can use Magic and use all six elements with extreme talent. She could not be able to use both very spells that existed and could create her own. Following her death, the only other person to rival her magical skills was Roswall. Some of her notable magics are the Al Shario, Jiwald, and Goa. Al Shario allowed Echidna to bring stardust down to earth to massacre her opponents and was a magic that is impossible to avoid. Jiwald is Magic that allows for the production of heat rays from Echidna's fingertips and would pierce through an opponent. Goa is a skill where she could produce a blaze of fire to massacre any opponents nearby.

Another notable spell that Echidna attempted to complete was the Soul Transference. Soul Transference was considered a forbidden spell and is where a person can move their spirit from one body to the other. However, the caster and the body it is transferred must be blood-related for this to work. Echidna was unable to complete this before being defeated. The spell was instead completed by Roswaal, who used to survive until today.

While Echidna has a dark and villainous side, she has formed strong bonds with characters in the series. In particular, she is connected with Beatrice, Subaru, and Roswaal.

Beatrice

Beatrice, along with Puck, was created by Echidna 400 years ago. She refers to Echidna as her mother, and while they may disagree on things, she shows some respect towards her.

Subaru Natsuki

Echidna gains immense interest in Subaru Natsuki’s ability, "Return by Death." She is interested in Subaru's ability as with it, she can collect a tremendous amount of knowledge. She goes as far as inviting him to a tea party to strike a conversation and to offer her assistance.

Roswaal Mathers

The two first meet when Roswaal was still young, and those around him were mistreating Roswaal, and realizing his magical potential, Echidna takes him under his wing. She teaches him how to use Magic and ultimately allows Roswaal to master all six elements of Magic. Roswaal considers her the most important person in his life, and after she passes, he becomes obsessed with reviving her and willing to do anything for her.
