About The Seven Deadly Sins: Story

The story starts when Elizabeth Liones, Liones’ third princess, meets Meliodas, the leader of the Seven Deadly Sins. The two search to find the rest of his comrades so they can clear their name and also free Liones from the Holy Knights.

The Seven Deadly Sins are a group of knights known as the strongest knights of the Liones Kingdom. The group is made of seven criminals who have been convicted of different crimes. Each has symbols carved onto them based on the seven deadly sins. One day, they were framed for the assassination of Zaratras, the Great Holy Knight. They were soon captured by the Holy Knights and were deemed, traitors. The group disbanded to escape capture from then on and have parted ways since. Ten years after the incident, the group reunited and helped Elizabeth Liones restore her kingdom and free the kingdom from the harsh rules that Holy Knights imposed.

About The Seven Deadly Sins: Characters

The main characters in the series are Elizabeth Liones and the Seven Deadly Sins. In particular, Elizabeth has a strong relationship with Hawk and Meliodas.

Meliodas is the leader of the Seven Deadly Sins and wears a dragon symbol, representing wrath. Despite being the Sin of Wrath, when he finds someone close to him hurt or killed, he conceals his rage by pretending to be aloof and interacts with Elizabeth inappropriately. Elizabeth and Meliodas meet as Elizabeth looks for help to free her kingdom from the reigns of the Holy Knights. She is courageous and is willing to risk her life to protect those she considers close. Unfortunately, she is also very naive and is often influenced or tricked by Meliodas.

The Seven Deadly Sins Development

The series initially began as a one-shot for Weekly Shonen Magazine in November 2011. While the author had always decided to center the series around Meliodas and Elizabeth, he had thought about storylines weekly to keep them new and unpredictable. This is why so many characters have personalities that significantly differ from their appearance. The author did this to create elements of surprise continuously.

The Seven Deadly Sins Development: Production

The manga was written and illustrated by Nakaba Suzuki. The series was officially serialized on October 10th, 2012, and concluded on March 25th, 2020. There were 41 volumes in total. The characters' names are based on characters from King Arthur, but Suzuki adds his interpretation of personalities to create something new. When discussing the most challenging aspect of creating the series, Suzuki states that it was hard to design Meliodas’s profile. He wanted the protagonist to be a “child” despite still being an adult on the inside. Suzuki also made sure to show a realistic interpretation of the character dynamics and relationships, as he thinks that not everyone gets along well with everyone. For him, it was essential to show that not all of the Seven Deadly Sins were “best friends.” He is also the author of a new series named the “Four Knights of the Apocalypse.”

The Seven Deadly Sins Development: Reception

Due to the immense popularity of the series, there have been multiple spin-offs, video games, and illustration collections produced based on the Seven Deadly Sins. Most notably, the manga was adapted into an anime series, and with its immense popularity, it has made multiple seasons and multiple films based on the manga. It has also been licensed by Netflix, with dubbed and subtitled versions being produced of the animation. The series has sold over 37 million copies as of March 2020. When released on Netflix, it was the fourth most binge-watched show on their platform!

The series has also received very positive reviews from multiple critics and was nominated for the 2014 Manga Taisho Award and the Best Youth Comic at the 42 Angouleme International Comics Festival.
