About Mai Sakurajima

Mai Sakurajima is the primary heroine and titular Bunny Girl Senpai in Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. She is a popular actress and model as well as a high school student afflicted with Adolescence Syndrome.

About Mai Sakurajima: Background

Mai entered the entertainment industry at a young age due to her mother's photography business. After quickly gaining success and fame, she started to feel the pressure of her job conflicting with her school life. Her frequent absences kept her from making friends or joining any social circles, leaving her isolated and alone. This took an emotional toll on Mai and manifested in a case of Adolescence Syndrome that made her nearly invisible to others. She first enjoyed this break from the spotlight before worrying that she may disappear forever.

As a working teenager, Mai is very serious and responsible. Aside from dealing with her Adolescence Syndrome, Mai is level headed, calm, and rational. Through her interactions with Sakuta Asuzagawa, Mai displays a snappy, joking nature with some tsundere tendencies. She is sometimes withholding regarding her true emotions but is genuinely kind and affectionate under the surface.

About Mai Sakurajima: Abilities

Mai's introduction to the series was her experience with Adolescence Syndrome: an abnormal and somewhat supernatural affliction caused by the instability of puberty. Mai's Syndrome manifested from her anxieties about overexposure in the public and isolation in her school life. As a result, her presence became difficult for others to remember and even detect. She tested the extent of her invisibility by going to the library dressed in a suggestive bunny girl costume. Sakuta was the only one to perceive her during this time and helped cure her syndrome by confessing his love for her in front of the entire school.

Throughout her career, Mai developed skills in modeling and acting. She is also skilled in time management through balancing work and school. While not explicitly stated, the light novel implies Mai has good grades and effective study techniques.

Other Important Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai Characters

As the first character seen dealing with Adolescence Syndrome in the story, Mai develops a close relationship with the rest of the case. She is particularly close to the protagonist, Sakuta Asuzagawa.

Sakuta Asuzagawa

Sakuta Asuzagawa is the main character and titular Rascal in Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. He is blunt, stoic, and somewhat socially withdrawn as a result of his own experience with Adolescence Syndrome. Sakuta ignores the status quo of his high school, which allows him to perceive others' afflictions with the syndrome. His deadpan expression and delivery define his sardonic personality.

During Mai's case of Adolescence Syndrome, Sakuta was the only person who easily saw and remembered her. He travels with Mai in an attempt to get people to notice her but panics when he also starts to forget about her. Sakuta then cures Mai's case by publicly confessing his love for her. The two have a playful, teasing relationship, but care deeply for each other under the surface.

Nodoka Toyohama

Nodoka Toyohama is a secondary character in the story's second arc and Mai's half-sister. She was born through Mai's father's second marriage. Nodoka's mother and Mai's mother acted spitefully towards each other, using their daughters' careers as ammunition. Nodoka entered an idol group with moderate success.

Despite her achievements, Nodoka's mother would constantly compare her to her more successful older sister. This caused Nodoka to develop a deep inferiority complex and Adolescence Syndrome case in which she switched bodies with Mai. She and Mai switched back after Mai cures Nodoka's syndrome by proving that she truly cares about her.
