Riko Made in Abyss - Nendoroid
Made in Abyss is a dark fantasy and adventure series that first began as a manga written by Akihito Tsukushi in 2012. Since then, however, the franchise has expanded into the realm of anime and video games as well. Although the series is known for its cute character designs, its dark, gruesome plot has caused it to spread quickly among fans, particularly after its anime adaptation in 2017. Due to the popularity of the series, many manufacturers have created a wide range of merchandise, one of the most popular being figures based on its main characters. Of course, this is especially true for the main protagonist of Made in Abyss, Riko, who received a figure from Good Smile Company titled the "Nendoroid Made in Abyss Riko" in 2019.
Nendoroid Made in Abyss Riko
This figure of Riko has her wearing her usual Delver gear, which consists of a brown shirt and shorts, a tan jacket with a matching hat, a pair of boots, a set of glasses, and her red whistle, noting her Delver rank. Like with many other Nendoroid, this figure also includes plenty of articulation and extra pieces to allow for a variety of customization. For example, this set includes several face plates to change Riko's expression from a standard happy smile to a starry-eyed stare, to a closed-eyed smile. Other additional parts include interchangeable hands and legs. In addition, Riko's hat and whistle are also removable, allowing for even more possibilities.

Riko is a young Delver and one of the main protagonists of Made in Abyss.
About Riko: Backstory
Riko is the daughter of the White Whistle Lyza and the Black Whistle Torka, meaning that both of her parents were expert Delvers. One particularly notable aspect of Riko's birth, however, is that she is one of the few people who have been born inside of the Abyss. When it comes to her personality, Riko is a very cheerful and optimistic child, though her curiosity regarding the Abyss knows no bounds. She is endlessly curious about the many mysteries surrounding the Abyss and strives to become a White Whistle like her mother. This desire is often seen as risky and reckless, as the Abyss is home to many horrors and tragedies, though this does not stop Riko. Despite her recklessness, she is rather fragile, especially compared to other characters like Reg. However, she constantly strives to climb lower and lower into the Abyss.
About Riko: Abilities
Although Riko is particularly weak when compared to her companions, she has an incredible amount of knowledge about the Abyss, the many different artifacts found within it, and the flora and fauna on each individual layer of the Abyss. In addition, Riko is notably skilled when it comes to cooking and can create delicious dishes even when using ingredients that she is unfamiliar with. Riko may have to rely on others like Reg when it comes to tasks that need physical strength, but her knowledge of the Abyss allows her to create plans with the others. Although not necessarily an ability per se, Riko's everlasting positivity also tends to have those she comes across gather toward her, which also may be considered one of Riko's strengths.
Other Important Made in Abyss Characters
Throughout Riko's journey to the bottom of the Abyss, two of the most important characters that Riko travels with are Reg and Nanachi.
Reg
Reg is seemingly some type of android in the shape of a young boy around Riko's age. Even at first glance, Reg is quite obviously not a regular human, as his hands are made of metal and have mechanical components added to them. In addition, Reg is also one of the only known individuals who are immune to the Curse of the Abyss, which gets more and more debilitating the further one goes. At the beginning of Made in Abyss, Reg saves Riko with his incinerator after she was chased by a Crimson Splitjaw in the higher levels of the Abyss.
Although Reg's origin and history are largely shrouded in mystery since Reg himself lost all of his memories. As such, the only hint both Riko and Reg have to go on is a sketch found in the journal of Riko's mother, which causes them to believe that Reg is from the bottom of the Abyss. In addition to his incinerator, Reg also has extendable arms, incredible durability, and superhuman senses. As a companion for Riko, Reg is invaluable as he acts both her defense and offense since she cannot protect herself against the threats of the Abyss on her own.
Nanachi
Nanachi is a Hollow who was one of the many victims of Bondrewd's experiments to discover and understand the mysteries of the Abyss. As a result of the experiments and the Curse of the Abyss, the once human Nanachi was transformed into a rabbit-like humanoid creature. She is close friends with Mitty, another child who was subjected to Bondrewd's experiments. Although Nanachi remained largely humanoid, Mitty became largely deformed, but virtually immortal in exchange. After seeing Mitty being endlessly tortured, they simply wished to find a way to put Mitty out of their misery. When it comes to notable abilities, becoming a Hollow caused Nanachi to become an incredible tracker and observer. In addition, being so greatly affected by the Curse of the Abyss caused Nanachi to be able to see exactly how the Curse itself flows in the Abyss, making it easier to avoid.
