About Kurapika: Background
Belonging to the Kurta Clan, a clan that has irises that turn scarlet when in emotional turmoil, Kurapika strives to become a Blacklist Hunter and avenge the death of his clan. His clan was massacred by the Phantom Troupe, who stole the scarlet eyes and sold them on the black market. After this experience, Kurapika becomes determined to become a Hunter.
Kurapika is depicted to be very calm and intelligent. He tends to keep his distance from others due to the trauma of losing those close to him at a young age. By keeping his heart closed, he uses it as a way to keep himself level-headed and as a way to stay on track to achieve his goal. Despite the hardships he has faced, he also shows moments of kindness. There are moments where he expresses love and smiles with his friends. However, while he is kind at heart to achieve the goal of avenging his clan, he is willing to become ruthless and compromise his morals. This leads him to work with the rebellious sides of society.
About Kurapika: Abilities
While at the start of the series, Kurapika’s abilities are very limited, his power progresses to the point of being more potent than Killua. His strength is also apparent, as he is one of the few characters who have successfully killed a member of the Phantom Troupe. Kurapika’s exceptional combat technique results from his determination to avenge his clan.
Being a member of the Kurta Clan, he has scarlet eyes. Kurapika’s eyes will turn scarlet red when they become angered, and this triggers an increase in physical strength. This strength is so powerful that Kurapika was able to take on three grown adults and overpower them as a child. However, in return, he cannot control himself and loses all rationale. For him, this state is activated the moment Kurapika sees a member of the Phantom Troupe and makes him primal and unable to think level-headed. However, usage of these scarlet eyes has severe repercussions on his health and can leave him feverish and unable to move for over a day.
Kurapika is a Conjurer and is able to create an object with the use of his imagination. He turns into a specialist when his scarlet eyes activate. He has been deemed an all-rounder Nen user and can incorporate Emission, Manipulation, Enhancement, and Transmutation elements. Most commonly, Kurapika conjures five chains that extend from each of his fingers. He can conceal the chain and adjust the size and length so he can bind his enemy without them knowing. He can also combine the “Emperor Time,” which gives him the ability to shatter rocks.

Despite Kurapika’s cold and uncaring demeanor, he is a kind heart and is surrounded by many friends. While initially cold, his friends start to crack open his hard exterior and even reconsider his determination for revenge.
Gon Freecss
Gon Freecss is one of Kurapika’s friends. The two meet at the Hunter Exam and become closer from then on. On multiple occasions, we see Gon worried about Kurapika’s need for revenge and his mental stability as a result. So, along with Killua and Leorio, the four of them set out on multiple adventures to protect each other from different villains which follow after them.
Chrollo Lucilfer
Chrollo Lucilfer is the founder and leader of the Phantom Troupe. He is a powerful individual and is the one who led the massacre of the Kurta Clan. Due to this incident, Kurapika has vowed to avenge his clan by killing those in the Phantom Troupe, hence is also after Chrollo for massacring and selling his clan's scarlet eyes. The Kurta Clan massacre shapes Kurapika and leads to his cold and introverted personality.
