About Batman the Animated Series

Batman: the Animated was created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Mitch Brian in 1992. The series aired on Fox Kids until 1995 for a total of 85 episodes. Unlike previous superhero cartoons, Batman: The Animated Series took a more adult-oriented approach. With on-screen violence, realistic firearms, and a dark thematic tone, the series established a new precedent for Batman media. The creative team looked to Tim Burton's Batman films for inspiration as well as the Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons. These combined elements gave the show a distinct, "dark deco" aesthetic that critics praised. The series famously introduced many characters that would join the comic canon, including the Joker's sidekick, Harley Quinn.

About The Joker

The Joker is a supervillain depicted throughout the Batman series in comics published by DC comics. He is an especially dangerous and merciless criminal and becomes Batman's archenemy. In the Animated Series film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, the Joker's backstory is revealed. The pre-Joker Jack Napier worked as a chauffeur and hitman for Gotham City mobsters in the Valestra Mob. After the mob dissolved, Napier struck out on his own and formed a small gang. In his first encounter with Batman at the ACE Chemical Plant, Napier fell into a vat of toxic waste. This changed his appearance giving him bright white skin, green hair, and red lips. The Joker's design and mannerisms in the Animated Series were inspired by Jack Nicholson's portrayal in the 1989 Batman Movie. Mark Hamill's critically-acclaimed voice performance in the show heightened his prominence as a voice actor.

Other important Batman: the Animated Series Characters

The Joker is only one of many iconic DC villains fighting Batman in the Animated Series.

Batman

Batman is the protagonist in Batman: the Animated Series based on the superhero from DC Comics. As a child, Bruce Wayne witnessed the murder of his parents during a petty mugging. The experience scarred him and eventually turned into a lifelong obsession. After years of mental and physical training, Bruce Wayne invented his crime-fighting alter ego: Batman. Unlike most portrayals of Batman, the hero of the Animated Series doesn't play into his spoiled, Billionaire playboy image. Instead, Bruce Wayne is assertive, intelligent, and involved in his company while maintaining his secret identity.

The Penguin

The Penguin, Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot, is a Gotham City villain. He is well-known for his bad habits, shocking physical appearance, and love of fine arts. His arsenal of umbrella-themed weapons serve different purposes, such as delivering deadly attacks or deceiving enemies. The creators based the Animated Series Penguin design on the character seen in the film Batman Returns. This portrayal included various physical deformities, such as a beak-like nose and fused hand "flippers." However, in the Animated Series, the Penguin retains his refined nature and backstory from the comics.

Mr. Freeze

Mr. Freeze, or Victor Fries, is a former scientist turned supervillain in Gotham City. As a scientist at GothCorp, Fries started working on the side to find a cure for his wife's terminal illness. After discovering Fries' actions, the CEO shutdown Fries' lab and knocked Fries into his own cryogenic chemicals. Fries lived but underwent physical changes that prevented him from functioning at temperatures above freezing. As a result, he became the villain, Mr. Freeze, to exact his revenge. The Animated Series notably changed Mr. Freeze's character from a mad scientist gimmick to a tragic figure.
