About Pirates of the Caribbean

Pirates of the Caribbean is a Walt Disney Picture film series based on the theme park attraction of the same name. The film series begins with 2003's The Curse of the Black Pearl. The story revolves around blacksmith Will Turner and the pirate Jack Sparrow as they try to rescue Elizabeth Swann. Curse of the Black Pearl was a critical and commercial success. Many credit the film with launching Johnny Depp's career as a box office leading man. The film received two direct sequels to finish the story of Jack, Will, and Elizabeth. In 2011, a standalone sequel with the subtitle On Stranger Tides continued the franchise following Jack Sparrow. As of 2021, 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales is the most recent film in the franchise and marks Jack's last appearance. All five films take place in a fictionalized version of the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean.

Dead Men Tell No Tales follows Jack Sparrow as he seeks to outwit a group of ghostly Spanish Royal Navy officers led by his nemesis, Captain Salazar. He goes on an adventure to find the Trident of Poseidon to break the curse that keeps the soldiers alive and following him. Jack is joined by Will and Elizabeth's son, Henry Turner, and astronomer Carina Smyth to help him find the Trident.

About Jack Sparrow

Captain Jack Sparrow is the main protagonist of the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise played by Johnny Depp. He is a dubious trickster and morally gray adventurer acting his own self-interest above all else. While the central character in many myths and legends, most of these tales are embellishments made by Jack himself. The two loves of his life are the sea and his ship, the Black Pearl. Johnny Depp allegedly based his performance on Jack on Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and Looney Tunes character, Pepe Le Pew. Since his debut in 2003, Jack Sparrow has become one of the most recognizable film characters of all time. The character took Depp's career from cult films to blockbuster hits for the rest of the 2000s.

Other Important Pirates of the Caribbean characters

Jack Sparrow's key relationships lie with the rest of the core film trilogy trio: Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann.

Will Turner

Will Turner is a recurring main character in the Pirates of the Caribbean series portrayed by Orlando Bloom. In Curse of the Black Pearl, he is a blacksmith apprentice secretly in love with the Governor's daughter, Elizabeth Swann. After Elizabeth is captured by the ghost pirate crew of the Black Pearl, Will allies with Jack Sparrow to rescue her. Throughout the series, Will learns more of his own pirate lineage and grows progressively more entangled in the supernatural. In On Stranger Tides, Will and Elizabeth finally marry and Will becomes the new Davy Jones, captain of the Flying Dutchman. The character makes a cameo appearance in Dead Men Tell No Tales. By the end of the film, his son Henry destroys the Trident of Poseidon, breaking the curse that ties Will to the Dutchman.

Elizabeth Swann

Elizabeth Swann is the lead female character in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise portrayed by Keira Knightley. Elizabeth is an independent and intelligent woman, attracting multiple men with her beauty. However, she only reciprocates the affection of Will Turner, her love interest and future husband. She begins the film franchise as a proper lady, fulfilling the role of Governor's daughter. However, by the end, Elizabeth becomes a courageous pirate with a knack for battle strategy and imposing leadership skills.
