About Ghostbusters

Ghostbusters is a 1984 American paranormal comedy film. The film follows the exploits of three former Columbia University professors, Venkman, Stantz, and Spengler. After fighting a ghost in the New York Public Library and losing their jobs at the university, the group forms a paranormal investigation business: the Ghostbusters. After a number of successful investigations, the group sees a rise in demand for their services. This leads them to hire a fourth member, Winston Zeddemore.

As paranormal activity continues to increase at an alarming rate, the group discovers connections to a Sumerian god, Gozer. If summoned, the shapeshifting god will bring about the apocalypse. After the Ghostbusters are arrested due to an EPA investigation, two demigod spirits successfully combine to release Gozer into the city. The Ghostbusters convince the police to free them and attempt to stop Gozer in his final form: the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

About Stay Puft Marshmallow Man

Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, also known as "Mr. Stay Puft," is the final enemy in the original Ghostbusters film. He's the mascot of the fictional Stay Puft Marshmallow company in the Ghostbusters universe. Physically, he resembles a humanoid figure composed of stacked marshmallows wearing a sailor hat and scarf. His appearance references real-life mascots the Pillsbury Doughboy and the Michelin Man. Mr. Stay Puft becomes the physical manifestation of the Sumerian deity, Gozer, chosen by Ray Stantz. Since the Ghostbusters were given the choice of their final destructor, Stantz tried to pick something "that could never possibly destroy [them]." Though Mr. Stay Puft's screen time in the film is very limited, he became one of the most recognizable characters of the film series.

Other Important Ghostbusters Characters

Raymond Stantz

Raymond "Ray" Stantz was one of the original Ghostbusters and the member most devoted to studying the paranormal. Stantz is the most enthusiastic and positive member of the Ghostbusters. His dedication shows as he mortgage's his parents' house in order to finance the Ghostbusters business. As a result, Stantz is often considered the "heart" of the Ghostbusters. He also shows off his skills as a handyman, often repairing the equipment used by the company. In the film's climax, Stantz accidentally chooses the Mr. Stay Puft character as Gozer's final form, believing it to be something harmless. Stantz is portrayed by Dan Aykroyd who shares Stantz's love of the occult and wrote the film's screenplay.

Egon Spengler

Egon Spengler is a former Columbia University professor of paranormal studies and one of the original founders of the Ghostbusters. While Peter Venkman is the group "leader" and Ray Stantz is "the heart," Spengler functions as the group's brain. He notably designed and built the equipment used by the Ghostbusters, such as the iconic proton pack. Spengler tends to use a lot of paranormal jargon that only Stantz understands. His humor style relies on dry delivery and wit. Within the group, Spengler is the most dedicated to scientific study overall, as he studies spores and molds in addition to the paranormal. Spengler is portrayed by Aykroyd's co-writer, Harold Ramis.
