About Birds of Prey

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is a 2020 superhero movie based on characters from DC Comics. The movie follows Harley Quinn after her breakup with her partner the Joker. Without the Joker's protection, Harley finds herself at dangerous odds with nearly all of Gotham City. The central plot revolves around Roman Sionis' attempts to obtain a diamond with the secrets of the Bertinelli family fortune. The search for the diamond brings Harley, Sionis' nightclub singer Dinah Lance, detective Renee Montoya, and vigilante murderer "the Huntress" together. Against expectations, Harley unites the group to protect pickpocket Cassandra Cain, who stole the diamond from Sionis. Aside from Harley, the group of women forms their own crime-fighting group, the Birds of Prey.

About Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn is a recurring villainess in the DC universe. She is known for her partnership and complicated relationship with the Joker. Harley first appeared in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992 and entered the comic canon after. The film opens with Harley getting dumped by the Joker four years after the events of Suicide Squad. As the story progresses, Harley deals with discovering her own identity outside of the Joker and navigating Gotham without his protection. Harley's journey to independence involves facing long-deserved consequences, adopting a hyena, and gaining a protege: Cassandra Cain. Critics praised Margot Robbie's rich performance as the new Harley Quinn, a villain of her own.

Other Important Birds of Prey Characters

Birds of Prey stands out among the DCEU for having a primarily female cast.

Renee Montoya

Renee Montoya is a Gotham City detective who later resigns in the face of the police department's corruption. Like Harley, Montoya debuted in Batman: The Animated Series before entering the comic canon. In the films, she's presented as a fan of 80s cop movies and often quotes cheesy lines related to her investigation. Her fixation with Sionis and lack of concrete evidence leads to her suspension from the police department. She joins the rest of the main cast in protecting Cassandra Cain from Sionis' men. At the end of the film, she officially resigns from the police department and joins Huntress and Black Canary in forming their own vigilante justice group.

Cassandra Cain

In most appearances, Cassandra Cain is one of the women acting as a vigilante superhero, Batgirl. Her origin story in the comics revealed that she was raised to be a perfect bodyguard for Ra's al Ghul. As a result of her training, Cassandra has very limited speech and social skills and instead interprets body language as her main form of communication. In the movie, Cassandra is portrayed as a 12-year-old orphan pickpocket. She catalyzes the main story by stealing the Bertinelli diamond from Sionis' henchman, Victor Zsasz. By the end of the film, she grows to idolize Harley and stays with her as her apprentice.

Black Canary

Black Canary is the hero alter ego of two characters in the comics, Dinah Drake and Dinah Lance. In Birds of Prey, her name is Dinah Lance, a black lounge singer performing in one of Sionis' clubs. She later becomes his driver and works with the Gotham Police Department as an informant to protect her neighbor, Cassandra Cain. She mainly relies on her martial arts prowess when cooperating with Harley and Detective Montoya. However, she does use her superpower, the Canary Cry, in a unique instance of metahuman ability in the DC film universe. She fully adopts her Black Canary persona in the film's ending as part of the newly formed Birds of Prey.
