Larry Bird Background: Biography

Larry Bird was born in West Baden Springs, Indiana in 1956. He grew up in nearby French Lick, Indiana, from which he got his nickname "The Hick from French Lick." During high school, Bird channeled his energy through basketball, earning him a scholarship to Indiana University. After a month, he returned to his small hometown and worked for a year before returning to college in 1975 at Indiana State University. He led the Indiana State team to the NCAA tournament for the first time against Michigan State. The game was the most-viewed college basketball game on television due to the matchup between Bird and Magic Johnson. Their college rivalry continued through their professional careers.

Larry Bird Background: Career Highlights

Before graduating from Indiana State University, the Boston Celtics drafted Bird in the sixth overall pick of the 1978 season. He began playing for the Celtics in 1979 and drastically improved the team's record. At the end of the season, Bird earned Rookie of the Year and a spot on the All-Star Team. The Celtics continued to prove their worth as a title contender, winning in 1981. In 1984, Bird was named NBA Finals MVP and overall season MVP for the first time in his career. Bird became the third player in NBA history to earn three consecutive MVP titles in 1986. Health problems led Bird to a short 1988-1989 season and eventual retirement in 1992. The Celtics retired his jersey, number 33, that year.

Bird returned to basketball in 1997 as coach of the Indiana Pacers. Despite his lack of coaching experience, he led the team to their best NBA record at the time. As a result, Bird earned the NBA Coach of the Year for the season. His role as coach ended in 2000, but in 2003 Bird became the Pacers' president of basketball operations. In 2012, he won the Executive of the Year award. As of 2021, Bird is the only NBA player to earn NBA MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year.
