“I’ll be back”— the well-known catchphrase of possibly one of the most iconic villain/hero/anti-heroes to grace the silver screen. The Terminator franchise spans an incredible 6 movies, a TV series, and a plethora of video games and references in popular culture. Originally starring a beginner actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and directed by James Cameron, The Terminator set a high bar for science fiction and robot action movies in the 1980s. Following that in 1991, Terminator 2 broke the mold and became one of the highest-grossing action films of all time.

About The Terminator

The Terminator series is long and complicated. The essence of the series is that of a self-aware artificial intelligence sending a robotic assassin into the past to defeat the human resistance leader it fights in the future. From that stems multiple timelines and multiple dimensions in which sometimes characters crossover as the franchise expands. The Arnold Schwarzenegger T-800 is a recurring character throughout with a number of iterations; the original, Uncle Bob, Pops, and Carl.

About T-800 (Carl)

As Skynet had trouble sending a robot into the past due to the catastrophic reaction between time travel and metal, they had to invent a way to cover their machines with organic material. Thus the terminator model T-800 was born. According to the T-800 itself, “I'm a cybernetic organism. Living tissue over a metal endoskeleton.” Carl is slightly different though, as instead of mercilessly killing everyone that gets in the way, he opts instead to subdue them on his quest to assassinate John Conner. On the beach scene at the beginning of the movie, he could very easily have killed everyone including Sarah Conner but chose not to. This perhaps suggests that Carl was already set to read-write mode as his default operation unlike ‘Uncle Bob’ from Terminator 2 who is switched to read-write halfway through the movie.

Other Important The Terminator Characters

The plot of The Terminator changes slightly with every iteration. Originally it was a simple plot involving sending one man, to stop one machine, from killing one woman. It got convoluted however when that man happened to be the father of the child that Skynet was hoping to prevent being born. After this, another more advanced machine was sent by Skynet, which was countered by the human resistances reprogrammed T-800. It turns out though, that the leader of the resistance is in fact not John at all. It is Dani Ramos, the girl who was saved by Grace; eventually saved a child Grace, and Sarah apparently trained in the lead up to the non-nuclear judgment day.

John Connor

John Connor was the savior of humanity until the first judgment day was stopped. He is the son of Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese from the original Terminator movie. Brought up by his mother with tales of apocalyptic nuclear war and sentient machine armies, John’s childhood was spent learning to become a survivalist. After his mother was taken to a mental hospital and he was given to foster parents, the events of Terminator 2 happened and together with the reprogrammed T-800 (Uncle Bob), they stopped Skynet from launching its nuclear attack on the world. Shortly after this, however, John was found by one of many other T-800 units sent back in time to kill him and was assassinated on a beach in Guatemala in front of his mother.

Dani Ramos

Dani Ramos is a young woman who is saved from a terminator by the cybernetically enhanced human resistance fighter Grace. After the loss of her son John Connor, Sarah Connor went on a terminator eradication spree and spent the rest of her life hunting down terminator units that were sent back. Grace and Dani were then saved by an aged Sarah Connor while fleeing an invincible Rev-9 terminator. Dani receives the same training and knowledge that John would have, thus leading Dani to become the new savior of humanity and Skynet’s (now Legion) newest target.

Grace

Grace is a small child that is saved by Dani post-judgment day when she is attacked by a group of human bandits. Grace is raised by Dani in much the same way that Kyle Reese was by John Connor, and Dani and John Connor were by Sarah. In the end, Grace ends up receiving cybernetic enhancements to aid in the battle against Legion (previously Skynet) and is sent back in time to protect Dani from a Rev-9 unit that is sent back to terminate her.
