Tetsuro Araki is a Japanese animator storyboard artist and director that was born on November 5, 1976 in Sayama, Saitama prefecture. Some of his works are also registered by the pseudonym of Saburo Mochizuki.

Biography

Araki graduated from Tokyo’s Senshu University and began his career in animation with Madhouse, though he eventually moved on to Production I.G and later Wit Studio. He made his debut as a director in 2005 with the original video animation Otogi-Jūshi Akazukin, although he is best known as the director of the anime adaptations of Attack on Titan, Death Note and Highschool of the Dead. To date, Araki was also the director of two original anime series, Guilty Crown in 2011 and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress in 2016.

Tetsuro Araki has participated in several TV series, films, and OVAs, many of which garnered great success among critics and fans:

  • Aoi Bungaku Series (TV): He was the director and the storyboard designer of episodes 5 and 6, and went on to do the key animation for episode 6 as well.

  • Attack on Titan Anime: Season 1 (TV): He was the chief director, the storyboard designer and the episode director of episodes 1 to 25.

  • Attack on Titan Anime: Season 2 (TV): He was the chief director, worked as a storyboarder and key animator for the opening theme, and acted as unit director for episode 37 and that season’s ending theme.

  • Attack on Titan Anime: Season 3 (first half): He was the chief director of the series and also worked on the storyboard for the opening theme while acting as the episode director for episodes 54 and 59.

  • Attack on Titan Part 1: Crimson Bow and Arrow (movie): Acted as chief director.

  • Attack on Titan Part 2: Wings of Freedom (movie): Acted as chief director.

  • Attack on Titan: Ilse’s Notebook (OVA): Acted as chief director.

  • Attack on Titan: No Regrets (OVA): He was the chief director. Araki also wrote the storyboard and took the role of episode director for episode 2.

  • Black Lagoon (TV): Wrote the storyboards for episodes 9 and 12; directed episodes 3 and 9.

  • Blade (TV): Wrote the storyboards for episodes 9 and 12; directed episodes 3 and 9.

  • Death Note (TV): Took the role of director and wrote the storyboards for four episodes, as well as the opening themes of seasons 1 and 2. He also directed episodes 1 and 37. Araki also wrote lyrics for an insert song and worked on animation for the opening themes.

  • Death Note Relight 1: L’s Successors (special): Acted as director and created screenplays and storyboards.

  • Di Gi Charat Nyo (TV): Created the storyboards for episodes 54 and 63 and directed episode 54.

  • Galaxy Angel (TV): Created storyboards for four episodes and acted as unit director for four others; Araki is also credited as an assistant episode director for episode 18 and “setting production”.

  • Galaxy Angel S (special): Created the storyboard for episode two acted as a unit director for episodes 1 and 2.

  • Galaxy Angel X (TV): Created storyboards for five episodes and acted as unit director for episodes 5, 6, and 25.

  • Galaxy Angel Z (TV): Created storyboards for four episodes and is credited as a unit director for these four episodes and episode 18.

  • Guilty Crown (TV): Acted as chief director, created storyboards for the two opening themes and four episodes. He is also credited for directing episode 1 and 22 (as an assistant), acting as a unit director for the first opening, illustrating episode 22’s end card, and key animating episode 22.

  • Gundam Reconguista in G (TV): Created storyboards for episode 10. Araki also acted as a unit director for this episode.

  • Gungrave (TV): Created storyboards for episodes 13 and 25, directed 5 episodes, and worked on episode 26 as an assistant director.

  • High School of the Dead (TV): Acted as chief director; created storyboards for the first opening and episodes 1, 4, and 12; directed the opening theme and episodes 1 and 12, acted as a unit director for the opening theme, and key animated episode 12.

  • Highschool of the Dead: Drifters of the Dead (OVA): Acted as chief director and episode director.

  • Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (compilation movie): Acted as chief director.

  • Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (TV): Acted as chief director; created storyboards for the second opening theme and episodes 1 and 2; directed episode 1; worked on key animation for the first opening theme.

  • Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato (movie): Acted as director and scriptwriter.

  • Kaiji (TV): Created the storyboards for episode 14.

  • Kurozuka (TV): Acted as chief director, series composer, storyboard writer for the opening theme and episodes 1 and 12, and directed episode 12.

  • New Cutey Honey (OVA): Worked on key animation for episode 7.

  • Otogi-Jushi Akazukin (OVA): Acted as chief director, storyboard writer, and episode director.

  • Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat (TV): Created the storyboards for episodes 31, 45, and 46; directed 7 episodes.

  • Psychic School Wars (movie): Acted as a unit director.

  • Sword Art Online (TV): Created the storyboards for episode 23.

Under the pseudonym of Saburō Mochizuki, Tetsuro Araki also participated in the production of other anime projects, especially as a key animator and storyboard artist, some of which include the following:
